David Silva in CM

He already plays pretty much in the centre, there is no doubt he could play CM, just look at Modric.

He drifts into the centre but that leaves a gap out wide and when Tevez does the same we become pencil thin. If Silva was purposefully played in the middle we wouldn't lose the width.

It's really not a good post at all, so many misinformed points. But, Bluemoon being Bluemoon, people will see that it's pretty lengthy and don't know any better themselves so will strangely give it credit.

Silva in CM sounds like a good idea, I'd like to see it tried, but you should have just said that rather than writing 100 words of guesswork.

Please enlighten us with your superior knowledge.

and then there was silence. I hope Kompany33's next post is less than 100 words....I wonder who he's been before tho'

As I've said a few times in the past, in my opinion, Mancini will go for the 4-5-1/4-3-3 hybrid and is building towards this. The only real thing that we lack is a DM who can spray balls around, we use De Jong as a stopper. This isn't that big of a deal, Chelsea used Makelele during their transition period, and Bayern/Inter did the same with Van Bommel/Vieira.

Bollocks. I don't know what you're suggesting here as Chelsea were a much better side when Makelele was there and nobody was "spraying".

This eventually leads to a Pirlo/Alonso type who can defend and close down but can also have a range of passing to bring the wider players into the game and allow the CMs in front of him to be more mobile.

Pirlo has never been good at defending and has never done any defending, Gattuso and Ambrosini have been the men defending for Milan over the years.

The thing is, when you play wide players in this formation, they aren't actually wingers, they are people who either cut inside behind the frontman, or make runs to be the man up top. For those of you who watched Mourinho's Inter last year, or even this year, you'll notice the similarities in style and formation.

That's not true at all. In 50% of teams using this formation, the main objective is to cross the ball in from the wide areas, not necessarily to cut in.

Mourinho then picked up on this

Lmao. He's been playing the formation long before Ronaldo and Rooney came along.

and started playing two strikers out wide with a lone frontman (Balo/Eto'o/Suazo and Milito/Pandev). He carried this on at Real with Benzema/Higuain/Ronaldo. Actually, one of the reasons why I think that he's not really setted there is because he has Ozil and Di Maria in the squad who aren't "Mourinho players".

Total guesswork. Pandev never played as a striker, only ever on the wings. Suazo never played at all. Mourinho does play 451, but the reason for playing Eto'o RW was because he was the best RW on offer, Milito was hardly going to do it, but Eto'o could. Mourinho started off in the PL using Robben and Duff as wingers, hardly what you'd call "strikers out wide".

Not settled in Madrid? He's barely done a thing wrong out there but when you're facing Barca in this kind of form no matter what you do will fall short. The results he's obtained this season would more than warrant 1st place and 10 points clear in any other league. He was never going to be able to keep up with Barca.

Anyway, the point I'm making is that this tactic eventually develops into three strikers on the pitch, and I think that the Dzeko signing (big targetman instead of false nine like Tevez) is another big indicator of where we are going.

No it doesn't. Dzeko was probably brought in because Mancini was sick of 20 crosses being hit into the box per game with nobody in the box, because we need a better squad, and because our only other goalscorer spends 99% of the game outside the box.

Toure would take the Barry role of understated midfield general (which is exactly the same role as Carrick played in this formation at United, or Khedira/Diarra at Madrid or Cambiasso at Inter).

That isn't Cambiasso's role.

I've heard people recently say that we don't have any cover for Silva, but with him out wide, we have Tevez who can play there without a problem and is just as creative/important. If he moved into the centre though, we would need to sign again.

Tevez isn't creative in the slightest. He's a greedy shit and every pass he plays he plays with the intention of getting it back sometime soon, not to progress as a side.

Obviously not as a De Jong stopper, but more of a Cambiasso type player

Hahahah goodness me, Cambiasso is the same kind of player as de Jong, exactly the same, he is nothing but someone who breaks up the play and puts in tackles, he does not have any kind of passing range. You've obviously only ever seen him in the CL and have probably been fooled by the occasional forward run and a goal against Chelsea.

Oh and stop saying "false nine", it makes me sick when you say that.

100% agree, silva plays his best football in centre midfield

the only thing missing is intelligent runs from our fullbacks. micah has this down to a tee at the moment - not sure about kolarov

when that gets sorted silva will have space... god help our opposition.

Yeah right, thanks for a great link too.

Yes, Silva must be played in central midfield and could well make all the difference with quick passes out to the wings or through the middle. Tevez cannot carry out this role.

Oh, and bring Superman back as cover.

has Silva sprayed many passes throughout the field this season? His work is more in that 5-15 yard range, splitting the last line of defence.

I think he plays where he's told to play and does what he's told to do.
