Resale value does my head in. If we want to be top of the tree why would we sell our best players anyway? So we would buy a youngster, develop him into a player worth far more than when we bought him and then sell him to our rivals? People have been listening to ferguson too much.
We need a mixture of the best young players in the word and the best players in the world who have experience like yaya and hopefully de rossi. Resale value is secondary to success – if you’re successful players (other than the odd exception) won’t want to leave anyway.
Just because a player will have resale value doesn't mean u have to sell him. Resale value will reflect the playing life of a player. Hence buying young players will mean that we are either able to resign them without paying another excessive transfer fee or we can recoup some of our investment by selling and pursuing other targets.
Resale value and value in general should always be of the utmost concern unless there are no plausible alternatives. To say there are no comparable alternatives to de Rossi is a stretch.
For the record I reckon I believe we should buy de Rossi. But chastising someone for using their brain and discussing resale value shows a lack of understanding.
