Roma have released those figures to try appease fans, their way of saying they tried to keep him.

I think he'd be signed by tonight if that deal is true.

I don't think it is though...

The sooner this is resolved, the sooner we can either celebrate the arrival of the brilliant De Rossi or ponder who we might go for instead - Martinez and Sissoko are good options but neither are close to De Rossi's ability even if they would represent long-term value.

In terms of ability, I'd have Martinez over De Rossi anyday. It's his mentality which separates him apart.

Martinez is a great prospect but I don't think he is close to De Rossi yet, De Rossi is an amazing footballer who rarely makes a mistake (same can't be said of Martinez). Martinez is also in that awkward stage like Kompany was and Rodwell is I think too, the manager doesn't seem sure what his best position is, he is often at CB for Bilbao yet he's been lauded as a midfield prospect. Martinez would be a great long-term signing for us but I think De Rossi would bring us something NOW.

from Gabriele Marcotti

Details

Sky Italia report Roma offer De Rossi €6m net, abt £9m gross a season (£180k/week). City wd have to go way above that to persuade.

He'll be staying in Roma now can't see us paying 200k a week or more....

I think Martinez will be more than happy with £80k/week and I think he has all what it takes to be one of the best Centre midfielders in the League.

Martinez would offer us NOW as well. He is versatile and could do the defensive job alongside Yaya or even play his position at times. Or even cover CB. Would be a great buy and he is young as well. Don't forget that he was listed in the top 100 players of 2011 as well.

But not sure if he would be any easier to sign than De Rossi. Probably a higher transfer fee (20m+) probably. But his wages would be probably 2x less than De Rossi's.

But i understand why Mancini's number 1 target is De Rossi. He is an experienced leader and his long passes are up there with Pirlo, Xabi Alonso etc...

He would add another dimension to our midfield.

If we can't get De Rossi i would love to see Martinez at City. I also like the look of Riccardo Montolivo at Fiorentina. Both young and talented and wouldn't command mega wages. Montolivo has just a year left on his contract, not sure about Martinez. Surely we could get them both for around £20 Mill.

My personal preference would be Martinez every day of the week. He and Mata were excellent in the recent under 21s comp. He is very versatile and can play DMF, CB and even CMF (which he played in the under 21 comp). This guy is the future and will be a regular for the full Spanish team in due course. Getting him will be difficult and could see Barca rival us for his signature if we went for him. I think his release clause is circa £36mill so I think we would have to pay at least £25mill, but he's worth the money
