I think I am 49 now and been following/been a fan of us for about 44 of them.Am glad it means so much to a lot of you lot but for me it was a small part of our history that I would not mind forgetting about

You think you are 49? Is there some uncertainty in your age?
Odd, isn't it?

Just been watching the Premiership Years 1999/2000. We weren't in the top division but Wimbledon, Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday and Watford bloody well were. How embarrassing. Also, the season ended with Leeds finishing in the top three, thereby qualifying for the Chimps League.

How did we tolerate this?

(1996 is up next). Was this the season the Geordies blew a twelve point lead and Nigel Clough scored for a goal for City and KK had his anti-Fergie rant?

this all sounds plausible apart from the Nigel Clough scoring a goal for us comment

I was born in a 3rd world country where they did not give you birth certificates and my mum and dad have gone a long time ago so there is some confusion as to when I was born.My passport says 64 so I must be 49 I think

I thought the same!. I remember being so made up when we signed Clough and thought he would turn our season around (I think it took till October to record a win)- how wrong I was. Always remember him giving the ball away to Giggs in the derby at Maine Road and Clarence slamming it in the top corner to make it 3:2. Never forgave the idiot for doing that - it was so avoidable.

We put up with it because it was our club and we loved them come what may.Sure we protested, sang ''What the fuck is going on??'' and ''Your not fit to wear the shirt!!'',fans ran on the pitch and remonstrated with players, one even ripped his season ticket up on the pitch as we were getting beaten at home to Bury...but we staill came back the next week for more.

We had some laughs along the way, some tears, even a bit of excitement in promotions, but generally we were shit most of the time. What it did do was form an iron will,a self depreciating sense of humour and loyalty amongst us.Rags couldn't understand how we used to turn up week after week,i know i had some ask me why in disbelief on more than one occasion!

It seemed the worse we got,the louder we sang and the more we laughed.Mad,bad,crazy,happy/unhappy times.A mirror of life in general.Supporting a succesful club was the easy way out and lots took it.Real people, real fans chose and stuck with City and we are now getting our reward.

I still can't believe we were in the wilderness for so long, that WAS criminal! When i stood on the terraces at Wembley and saw us lift the league cup in 1976,never did i dream it would be over 35 years before we won another trophy!

I am proud of our loyalty, our humour and going through the dark days,i just wish they wouldn't have lasted so fucking long, lol!!!

I doff my hat to you sir. Excellent post

The dark, up down, topsy turvy, theatrical days are what makes my Manchester City, such a beautiful and wonderful club. Fond memories and fond times, and I wouldn't change em for the world and it really makes you appreciate what we have, how far we've come and hopefully how bright the future will be.

You forgot the added value of buying your season ticket without having a clue which division we would be in. I think we did this at least 5 times! Character building but never again PLEASE.

Seconded. What a fantastic post. Sums up exactly what we are about. Everyone under the age of 25 should learn it off by heart!

Was 99/2000 the season Stockport beat us 2-1 at home. I have fond memories of that game.
Missed the first 15 minutes and County's first goal whilst queueing in the rain for my ticket.
Found out first hand why the Gene Kelly stand was given it's name.
Missed City's equaliser whilst still queueing for a half time beer (was it Wiekens)?
Saw County's winner though. This was the game I chose to take my new wife to as her introduction to City.
Guess I am lucky though as I was around when we were great in the sixties and seventies and the Kippax was at it's grandest. To see your team rise to be truly great twice in a lifetime is something I feel very privileged to have been part of.
We are City we have never done it the easy way which makes us truly unique and although it was shit at the time I wouldn't swap the dour days for anything now.
