Death Penalty

I'm not in favour of the death penalty, even for the worst offences.
I am though in favour of torture. You can't bring a dead person back to life but at least if we torture the wrong person we could always apologise to them afterwards.

You have a very apt username to be advocating torture.

He's taking the piss.

If anyshadow of a doubt, then no....but for a clear cut case like that twunt who did Lee Rigby....where there isn't any shadow of a doubt of his guilt....then I would happily push the buttons myself...

There are lots of things a state can do that an individual can't (lawfully) - tax citizens, conscript citizens into the armed forces, imprison people, fine people, declare war, make treaties with other nations, make laws that are binding on citizens - the list goes on. So I don't buy the argument that capital punishment is equivalent to murder. If it is, fining someone for speeding is theft.

I am however persuaded by the argument that says it just isn't practicable. The law makes too many mistakes. Innocent people would end up being executed.

I do however think that most murderers - and certainly the likes of Hindley and Brady, to name but two - should stay inside until they die. And they should be made to work until they reach retirement age, at least eight hours a day. No work - OK mate, you get just enough food and drink to keep you alive, the same menu every day, and you stay in your cell 24/7/365.

Agree with all of this, and I am also against the death penalty.
It's interesting to hear that people think the death penalty is purely for 'Revenge,' yet are quite happy to say that life imprisonment with no parole, minimal facilities, stone beds, no windows, poor food etc; isn't.
Not that I've got a problem with this form of 'punishment' for the likes of the two walking abortions who subjected that little boy to such suffering, but the fact is that revenge is part of our psyche.

I actually agree with you about the revenge thing .but I think that's wrong and rehabilitation should be the goal even for murderers. Obviously there's some people beyond help but even then there should be something beyond just locking them up and forgetting about them. The Scandinavian countries that have "nice" prisons, short sentences , and do everything towards rehabilitation have the lowest recidivism rates and overall seem to be happier as a society. I remember when gacy was executed , it was in the town my family was living at the time and people went down to the prison to like celebrate his death. It wasn't a quiet sadness reflecting on his victims either , people ate hot dogs, drank Bacardi breezers, and sang songs rejoicing in his death, it was weird as hell , I was 9 when that happened and it felt fucked up and wrong .

I do agree with rehabilitation, but you also agree it is an impossibility in some cases, there is no chance with the killers of the little boy recently, Brady and Hindley in the past, and various other serial killers. We often hear praises sung about the Scandinavian countries, how their political system is superior, and now how their penal system appears superior, however,if they are 'happier as a society' why do they have such high suicide rates?
Wall to wall 20 year old Britt Eklands, generous benefits, brilliant pensions and pickled sild for breakfast mustn't be enough.
Mind you, have you tried buying ale in Norway?
If you can find anywhere open longer than 30 minutes you'll then max out a credit card getting yourself and the wife a glass and a half, so maybe this is a contributory factor.

LOL actually the first night I was in Copenhagen I made the mistake of opening a tab and drinking as I'd normally drink. Stayed in after that. I wasn't trying to put living in Scandinavia on the same level of greatness as everyone here puts German football or anything I just think it'd be better if England moved closer to them than towards the states in terms of sentencing and care of offenders. Obviously I feel for victims families but if murderers are put to death or locked away 23 hours a day forgot about and made even shittier as human beings its only going to pass on the stupidity to those lucky enough to be related to them.

It's a 'no' from me.
As much as I want to seek vengeance on some of the most heinous bastards out there, I just can't. Because that would drag me down to a level that is backwards thinking and almost archaic.
