December TV games - update (page 8)

I often wonder how long will it be before fans walk away.

the bubble will burst one day and the tv companies will suffer as their arrogance wont allow them to see it coming.

It's about time fans of all clubs did a mass non-attendance across the country on the same weekend to show we're sick of home ticket prices and tele games being miles away for most away fans.

All televised games that aren't on a Sat/Sun should be within a couple of hour's drive for away fans.

That bubble’s been bursting for over twenty years apparently but it never seems to actually pop. I was down at the ground today and there were several groups being shown around the stadium. I’m guessing, from appearance, they weren’t from Beswick. And they’re the sort of fan that will happily pay massive ticket prices, so don’t expect the demand to dampen just yet. I’ve been to Colchester on a Friday, Southampton on Boxing Day and all points, times and days in between. And that’s not changing any time soon. I’ve long since stopped going to aways, bar the odd localish trip, as and when I can get a ticket and I’m resigned now to rarely, if ever having enough points to pick and choose, but I don’t think there was ever going to be a different outcome, given the investment we’ve made. Apologies, I’m rambling and seguing into a different topic. Back to marking kids’ books!

Friday night games. i can see the point, but please, limit the travel required. Travel to the other end of the country is just not on.

Friday night games appeal to me far more than Monday nights but I totally agree that they should be between teams within, at absolute most, a couple of hours drive away (as should Monday night games) yet so far this season there have been 3 Friday night matches - Utd v Saints, Chelsea v Liverpool, and Everton v Palace. It's a fucking piss-take and it shows that the TV companies really don't give a shit about away fans.

While I accept that there will be the odd anomaly due to the amount of matches screened live these days, I don't believe for one minute that they can't arrange for televised matches and the rest of the fixture list to be generally more convenient for the travelling supporter. For example, we have to play both West Ham and Chelsea away during a round of midweek fixtures. It's also an issue for fans of lower league teams too. At the Football Supporters Federation annual summit back in July, the new chairman of the Football League made a speech. Claimed he was fan friendly but when a Bristol City fan made the point that they have 4 or 5 midweek away matches against teams in the north west and Yoirkshire the FL chairman waffled on - to much sniggering -that this was pretty much a best case case scenario for Bristol City fans and that the fixture computer is programmed to make it as convenient as possible for away fans.

As someone pointed out the other day, Sty seem to deliberately pick teams a long way apart for Friday / Monday Night Football, as many supporters can't make the long trek and so (hopefully, from Sty's point of view,) invest in Sty Sports to watch their team.

We can blame the TV companies all we want, but it is the Premier League (and therefore the clubs we support) that don't place any restrictions on them when it comes to selecting the games for TV.

They could easily put rules in place that limit the distances between teams on Friday/Monday nights, and they could easily tell the TV companies that they have to give much more notice before changing dates. But then the TV companies would rightly pay less for the rights if such restrictions were put in place, and that's the last thing the clubs want.

So, yes, Sky, BT et al. don't give two shits about the fans, but neither do City or any of the other clubs. Money is their only interest.

True enough and can't argue with any of that.

Can't wait for them to move 1 of our home games to a Friday night! ! The joys of the M6 is bad at the best of times so god knows what time we will need to set off for a Friday game ? But of course we could always catch the train and incur the expense of a hotel for the night.
