Declan Rice

I think if Rice were not English we would be looking at £60m tops.
City seem to want a core of English players and is probably why we went for Grealish at that price.
Sterling left and potentially Kyle could go either this Summer or next. Doubts about Phillips making it.
So we need to rebuild that English foundation.
Other than Bellingham and Saka who have committed elsewhere, there are not many options left. Reece James maybe but very injury prone

Hypothetically he gets sold on being a regular starter for arsenal and a shoo-in for captain in the near future, for a team on the up, that pushed us for the league this year, who only want to improve and him signing adds to that (plus a bonus of not having to leave London)…. Whereas he may not get the same guarantees from us, regarding guaranteed starts etc.

I’m just playing devils advocate, but it’s not as straight forward as you put it. It’s not, choose City or you haven’t the mental fortitude and will to win etc.
Love this argument that he's good enough for Arsenal but not for City so he should sign for Arsenal.

This is basically where I’m at. If we get him then I think he’ll be a fantastic signing but if we don’t get him (and have done what we can to do so fee-wise with what West Ham want) but he chooses Arsenal then I’ll be glad we don’t get him.

Why would you choose Arsenal? The champions of the 5 of the last 6 seasons want you, the current treble winners and Champions League holders managed by Pep Guardiola who not only has proven himself to be one of the best ever but also excels in player (specifically midfielder) improvement and you choose Arsenal because you want to stay in London…?

It sounds like sour grapes, it’s not because we won’t know his mindset until the day the transfer is done either way.
Arsenal is in London

Declan Rice is a really good player. He would bring a lot to us, IMO, and I am not a fan of the argument about how is good enough for a really good side like Arsenal but not us: we are not a conceited fanbase. He would bring many options to us: cover for Rodri; a two man defensive midfield, releasing Alvarez to play alongside Erling; allows Foden, Grealish and KDB to become more offensively focussed.

Anyway, I would be very happy with such a signing.

What scares me is that Rodri might be looking to move back home OR is already being tapped up for it by the big guns (of which we are obviously one!).

For me, Rice doesn’t stand out in the WHU midfield or the England midfield, even though he’s first choice for both.

With the emergence of Stones (& Bernie and Rico) as second DMs with Rodri, it’s hard to understand why would want or need him?!
