With prize money and recent net spends at least 400 mil...
1. You understand how amortisation works?

2. £400m is 40% of £1bn

3. Our treble win, whilst boosting revenue somewhat, will also cause a massive increase in wages/bonuses as two dozen clauses will have been triggered.

We’re not going to be spending £1bn. We’re not going to be spending £400m. I very much doubt we get near £200m.

What happens if Pep turns that average player into a world class one. Ake for £40m & Akanji for £14m springs to mind
Akanji was an absolute steal.

Ake for £40m seems cheap now but at the time was widely reported as City paying over-the-odds.

You make a good point but in general a player who is good enough to get in THIS team is highly unlikely to go under the radar.

Have to be honest, given our transfer business last summer (including what ended up happening with our “Plan A” for fullback), and achievement over the course of the season, fixating on Gomez’ transfer as some sort of sign of weakness by Txiki and co is a very strange position to take.
I was speaking in a larger context. The point being people often cite Dias as evidence that our plan B or Plan C options work. I was highlighting that Txiki has had a Plan B that didn't work out, they haven't always blossomed. Gomez wasn't a high level player for us. It is just food for thought as we move through this midfield process. We can't assume that Txiki will identify some plan C that will excel. I hope he can find a stud like Dias, but it isn't preordained.

I’m way back here on page 920….

Can you ’future blues’ summarise the main shenanigans this morning for me….also, what’s it like in the future? Is it as good as they say ?

IMO, if we were ever serious about bidding for him (and not just driving his price up, and Arsenal's transfer budget down) up, then I agree.

Maybe a question of waiting for Wham to accept a bid & then match it, to end any bidding war.

If not (which you may recall is my personal belief), then its as dead as a Norwegian Blue.
I just think Rice is going to dig his heels in for a move to us.
I am probably wrong as I always thought he wanted arsenal.

Just goes to show how much I know

Wouldn't be the transfer window without a crushing snub/didn't want him anyway pull out - should be used to it by now- all the build up and bravado for nothing.
We seem to cope OK though - just a shame this massively improves our current closest rival.

Fair enough.

I personally wouldn’t be too worried, as we have very little evidence for any real weakness in either our transfer dealings or their impact on our eventual achievement levels.

And I also think we are going to be shifting our transfer strategy over the next few years to accommodate a swelling of talent in our youth ranks, to avoid the very astronomical amounts being paid for younger players this window.

Kovacic is the first step in that in my mind.
