Deep lying playmaker

A deep lying playmaker/regista is definitely needed, especially to dominate Europe. One who can pick a pass anywhere across the pitch, switch play, quick touch and pass. It will just shift the flow of the game, and maintain tempo. A definite must for any team with Title and European aspirations, the most successful teams all have a quality regista in the ranks. Regista can be a deep lying one like Alonso, Pirlo, Carrick, or a more forward one like Cesc, Xavi.

That's exactly the meaning difference between being an mother tongue Englishman and an Italian apprentice.... :-)
Thanks, Pal: that's exactly what I was unable to properly explicate. And finally I learnt how to turn regista in proper english, too.

Mancio4ever.
Your english is much better than all of our Italian so please don't worry. Welcome to Manchester!

read through most of this thread. agree with most of it. de jong is a defensive midfielder and that is it. love him. but he is not remotely close to what the team lacks. saw someone mention gago. he is a holding player. not a free roamer.

i agree...i think Juve would let Diego go for the right price...hes a hard worker and a pretty strong playmaker.

If you're looking for a guy to lie deep, one touch and switch it, then i think Barry's already very capable.

With Ireland injured and a switch to 442 or with Zab/DeJong/Barry in midfield he's been out of place and performing poorly.

Put the midfield back to DeJong/Barry/Ireland and he'll paly that role well.

the point ive all ways made is the fact yes ireland does this job no problem at all but he has nobody to cover him if he is either off form or injured and we just do not have a backup in the squad to battle or replace him in that role?

i thought at the start of the season we seemed pretty much balanced but as of late we have looked short of ideas in the middle of the park we need at least one more creative/box to box midfielder to balance up the midfield imho.

Epic fail. Diego is an out and out AM, the definition of trequartista. Most of you seem to be struggling to understand what a deep lying playmaker is. It is simply a midfielder who sits deep in line with the DM and dictates the play, makes the passes, cuts sides open from deep. Andrea Pirlo would be the perfect signing 5 years ago, but his age is too much of a barrier now. If we did sign an established DLP I'd love it to be Montolivo, and if we're aiming for a youngster it'd be incredible to sign Antonio Candreva, a young man destined to be a star. Although he's signed for Juve til the end of the season it'd be nice to see us sign him in the summer.

Anyway, enough of living in the dream world, this isn't how Mancio plays. He likes three terriors/defense minded midfielders in the side, he's never had a DLP in any of his sides so
I don't think he'll be changing that anytime soon, especially when you look at the players he's signed/signing, Vieira and Flamini or Gago, no creativity whatsoever. Let's just trust him on this one though.

I see your point but it's too extreme.
He loves to have the choice to switch to diamond: u're right saying that he'll never go for a kind of diego, but I'm ready to bet my retirement found that by next august we will have a top deep lying playmaker. awaiting odds... :-)

Thought I better read the whole thread before making comment on this subject! The title of the thread " Deep Lying Playmaker" popped straight out at me because I have an opinion on De Jong that albeit not bad makes me think is it productive for the team to have someone who just wins the ball but doesnt do much with it.

Now Ive thought about not making comment on this as people will say he's won countless number of MOM's, to which I would agree but there are occasions when we need more than just hard graft and lunging tackles?

I think the title of the thread is a good area of discussion.

Seems to me a lot of the responses on here either didn't read the question properly, or don't understand the role of a deep lying playmaker. Alonso is the perfect example, and one of the best exponents of the role in the world. Pirlo is another one. Nigel de Jong and Michael Johnson patently aren't, for different reasons. As some have said, I thought Barry would be suited to the role but it's not really worked out, although he does the job fairly well for England.
