Deep lying playmaker

Seems to me a lot of the responses on here either didn't read the question properly, or don't understand the role of a deep lying playmaker. Alonso is the perfect example, and one of the best exponents of the role in the world. Pirlo is another one. Nigel de Jong and Michael Johnson patently aren't, for different reasons. As some have said, I thought Barry would be suited to the role but it's not really worked out, although he does the job fairly well for England.

I don't think he's been given that role for us since very early on in the season (when he was playing well)

He's been asked to do a little bit of everything rather than concentrate on his strengths... i remember he kept Kaka quiet a few motnhs ago and came back to us and continued his poor form.

If we put barry in that role i think we'll see a much better player. But we're not playing that sort of formation currently, we'd need ireland in the side for balance imo.

Why?

I'd rather have a set of midfielders who can drill into the heart of the opposition by one-two combos.

When you command the middle and force your opponent to pack the centre, the wings are wide open for our side backs.

Mancini doesn't like long balls, so playing wide's just second priority.

Anyway, enough of living in the dream world, this isn't how Mancio plays. He likes three terriors/defense minded midfielders in the side, he's never had a DLP in any of his sides so.
I don't think he'll be changing that anytime soon, especially when you look at the players he's signed/signing, Vieira and Flamini or Gago, no creativity whatsoever. Let's just trust him on this one though.

That's exactly why Inter failed to progress in Europe. Really hope Mancini changes his mind. Deep lying playmakers are crucial to succeed in Europe. CL winners and finalists over the past half a decade have had quality deep playmakers or more forward regista's. Sides with Alonso, Pirlo, Carrick, Xavi have dominated the Champions League in the past 5 years.

Mancini was a playmaker himself. I think he gets the idea.

I think Regista's (or deep lying playmakers) is a dying breed. There is a short of these kind of players in the world. Thats why its very rare when clubs sell there Regista's to other clubs. Plus clubs that have these kind of players depend alot on them that they may struggle alot once they leave (liverpool is a pretty clear example).

Looking around there are very few Regista's out there. The obvious ones are Xavi (barca), Pirlo, Xabi Alonso, Veron (in the past). There are not many young decent Regista's but the one's that i know about are Éver Banega (valencia's player) he's pretty decent but still he's not a world class yet. The one that i like personaly is Hernanes (São Paulo) player. He's just 24 but he can both act as a regista and a box to box kind of midfielder. I think Milan are pretty close to signing him (probably a long term Pirlo's replacement).

This! 100 %.
Even if I consider Gareth to be a superb player who will be of great help to us, but he lacks something to feature that role at europe's top.
