Dennis Tueart video interview

Great video Gary as always.

Here's his 1977/78 First Division match worn away shirt featuring embroidered 76/77 League Runners Up COA badge.

DT would bag a hat-trick wearing this shirt during City’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on 24th August 1977.

Loved those oversized collars. On a windy day, you could end up in Platt Fields!

Dennis Tueart King of all Geordies, one of my all time City heroes.
It was Dennis I think who first gave me the “tingle”. All fans will know what I mean - the shiver of excitement, anticipation that something marvellous would happen when he got the ball. But at the same time a shiver of nervousness that it wouldn’t! I think only football can do that because the tingle only lasts till he loses the ball and may only happen a few times in a game. The second game I went to in Jan 75 ( think it was Noel Gallagher’s first) was the 5-1 home win v Newcastle. I was only young and was taken by my “Uncle Joe” who was a big Irish bloke who had 3 cans whilst his wife made me a doorstop cheese butty before the game. We sat in the Main Stand and for every goal he was stood up on his seat, half falling over cheering and swearing in equal amounts. And I still remember the goals now - Geoff Hammond got the first at the Platt Lane end with a long shot that seemed like the half way line to me, then supermac equalised for them and then Dennis took over. His first was a penalty but then second half he must have dribbled past 2 or 3 to score at the North Stand end, then shot in off the post and then King Colin hit the 5th after some lively one touch play.
What a player Tueart was. I was heartbroken when he left and still don’t fully understand whether it was spur of the moment or premeditated.
What I do know is we lost basically 2 full seasons of him before he came back. He didn’t quite have the pace by then but still a good goal scoring knack. Then in 81-82 he was on s great scoring run and then was out half the season again.
It’s an interesting question for me as to whether Alison would have come back, ripped the team apart etc had Tueart had still been at the club? I think his ability and goals would have stopped that dreadful run that meant Allison came back.
I suspect the Channon signing was Swales’s and of course when you gave big signings like that, he’s always going to play.

He was one of my favourite players but when I met him at a supporters club meeting a few years ago I was not impressed. Very full of himself and seemed to blame everyone but himself about why he first left City.

Worse, said a few inappropriate comments to a barmaid, who must have been half his age !
All laughed off as banter but it felt uncomfortable.

Never meet your heroes !

Hmm. I know someone who met Tueart at a supporters club do a few years back. He thought Dennis was a bit of an arrogant twat. Full of himself, you know? Now; I'm not in a position to confirm or deny that view, as I've never met Tueart. But the fella who proffered that opinion is not generally a shit stirrer/wum/troll. Maybe he got Tueart on a bad day? I don't know.

He may or may have not been but so what? He retired nearly 40 years ago. Unless he is doing /has done something completely egregious to other people or illegal it would make no difference to my view of him on the pitch

Did I say otherwise? I thought it was clear in my post that
A. That is the view of my friend. And
B. He was referring to his experience of meeting Tueart off the pitch. Nothing to do with what he contributed to our club on the pitch.

FWIW, I loved his first spell with us. Him on one wing, Barnes on the other, Royle and Kidd in the middle. Great times.

Dennis was a big reason I became a Blue!! Great interview and answered many questions I had about his time in New York. Just started my football education at that time. I was a 15 year old and played in high school. The Cosmos were a huge thing at this point in time they came out of nowhere and the leagues popularity skyrocketed. Looking back on things the Cosmos were quite Raggish.

At this time there was, of course, no internet and news was very hard to come by. The public TV station showed one game a week on a Saturday night about 45 minute highlights so you didnt get to see all the goals ad all that.

I ended up picking City to follow as my team and the rest is history. First time traveling abroad was my third year at uni. Ended up studying in Spain and I ended up going to the football almost every week there. That season the local team UD Salamanca were in the first division. They ended up falling on hard times but thats another story.

First game at Maine Road was a 1-0 win vs Stoke. Back then hardly any Americans followed or even knew about the "English First Division". It was a very different time and world. ow I get all the league games on my big screen, hi def TV in my living room!!

Cannot believe all the success that City have had the past 10 years or so. What a ride it has been!

Saw him at a supporters club do once, me n me dad a quick chat with him he was sound and funny, told the room rossiter/squash story and how close he was to joining the rags

Biggest take though was he isn't a fan of rodney marsh
