Devante Cole

BARNSLEY boss Danny Wilson is hopeful he can keep Manchester City loan striker Devante Cole for longer.

Cole, the son of former England and Manchester United hitman Andy, has signed for the Reds on loan until 5th January.

But Wilson hopes Cole, who has scored five goals in 13 appearances this season, will stay at Oakwell instead of being tempted to a Championship club in the New Year.

“We’re hoping we can get Devante for longer than when his loan expires in January,” revealed Wilson.

“I think we’re in a good position to do it, but we’re no further down the line in getting an extension at this moment in time.

“But it’s fair to say Devante is really enjoying himself here, he’s been made to feel very welcome and the fans have really taken to him.

“I don’t think he’s looking to go anywhere else at the moment, but the ball is completely in Manchester City’s court.

“However, I’d like to think that because he’s playing first team football they’d give us an extension to his loan.

“I can’t really see the longevity of him going to a Championship club and sat on the bench not playing games.

“He knows he can play here, get experience and get some game understanding at a tough level.”

“I would be surprised if he wanted to swap playing here for a Championship club.”

Maybe City wont extend his loan as they may have him lined up to play for New York with Villa and Lampard

My fault. Anyway, a view from a coach who wants to keep a player on loan can be different from a City fan's one. Moreover, it would be useful to know what he's good at there and what part of his game he needs to improve. I was able to learn more about his game when he has played for eds and u19... And there're only short highlights available for these league one matches

From snippets on Barnsley forums (which are badly designed and barren) they consider him one of there important players, only one who looks a goal threat and pacey. I'd say from that, the odd match report and highlights he looks very much the typical modern English striker. Tall, fast, good jump and gets into the box to finish chances without being outstanding in any particular area. At his age he's got all the time in the world to improve in areas and really get a good niche as a solid finisher (something we would do with on the bench and most teams would like starting).

Certainly the attributes to be a decent striker and get a good career (could see him being a decent championship striker) its whether he can cut out a niche for himself.

So yeah, doing pretty well, could be doing better, pretty valuable experience and could get us a few million down the line. Outside chance of being something more.

I'll ask my next door neighbour what he thinks of him. He's football daft, Barnsley and England home and away.

Whilst you want to see the players at a high level gaining experience, it's much more beneficial for Cole to be at a club that has faith in him and will play him most weeks. That will build his confidence and if he has a good season then he can get a loan to a better club next season. I don't think he is an out and out striker, but again he has time to decide where he wants to play and train specifically for that position.

Barnsley won 5-0 today against Button Albion in the FA cup. Devante got the 5th to continue his impressive loan there.

Been keeping an eye out for him.

Don't think he's coming back to be honest. Unfortunately not what we need nor good enough to break in and has found a comfortable level for himself. Don't think he has the mentality to really push on and become a PL level player
