Did Hughes make a big mistake?

Is no-one else getting sick of the (not so) subtle anti Hughes thread titles? This thread could be simply called do we still need to sort out our defense, or should we have bought defenders first. But instead Did Hughes make a big mistake? instantly points the finger at a man who has tried to get Terry and Lescot from the start of the window and got Barry the moment the season ended. Some deals take a while but we have Toure and Lescott is still in our sights.

The back 4 needs time to gel. I cant see Lescott coming this season. Everton wont sell to us this season. If he comes it will take more time for the defence to gel again another new player.
No matter what we think Hughes has to have his back 4 in mind and will have to start playing them in the Celtic game. So they know lads you are the back 4 I am starting the season with. Those that miss out will be pissed but will want to get in on the team. Time to support the team and back those players. Not everyone will be happy fans and players but support the boys in blue.

I hughes strengthened the defence 1st we would most probably have missed out on Tevez and Adebayor. It's catch 22. You have to get the players you need but if good players become available then you can't put them to the bottom of the queue until you get your defenders in

We did our offensive reinforcements first, but the defensive area, where time to gel and get to know the defensive partners is of utmost importance, we wait until last to do something with. And it clearly needs a big overhaul. I think two new central defenders (who are organizers, reads the game well and are great in the air), one right back, and some competition for Bridge is crucial. It is soon Blackburn and our defense would barely know eachother's names. What do you think?

You are absolutely right ....... after 18 defeats last season reinforcing the central defence was an absolute top priority , before anything else....... i said as much before last season had even finished ...... you build from the back ....... and at the back we looked so poor yet again tonite.

If he gets it wrong this time he'll be out!

Exactly. What do you say, well we've lodged bids for Terry and Lescott but they haven't signed yet and untill they do I'm not going to bid for Tevez, RSC or Eto'o. It's a joke, you go for the first names on your list and wait to see if they'll come. If you don't then you move on. Barry came quickly as did RSC (eventually) Tevez took a bit and Adebayor was quickly brought in as 2nd choice when the Eto'o deal fell through. Toure was brought in quickly when the Terry deal failed and the lescott deal is still in the air.

Richards isn't match fit yet but I'm sure he will be for the start of the season, and we looked much more solid when De Jong and Barry were on the pitch. No panic needed.

hughes has an impossible job,and the top 4 know it!they all know that he has to create a team with a winning mentality, all these new payers need time to settle in,it will take time!and thats something he doesnt have.

Getting other creative playmakers to put around Robinho before signing defenders makes sense to me. It's just playing to our existing stengths. Am I totally off on this one?

The problem is not that strikers were signed early, but that our lacking ability of getting defenders on board quick enough for some serious pre-season. Getting the defence to gel is absolutely crucial. Every single day of practice for our defenders before season starts is incredibly important and they are missing out.

I think selling elano without having a replacement was a mistake. I couldnt believe it when ireland went off and was replaced by ben haim moving our 16 million pound centre back into midfield. Toure ended up playing centre mid with zabaleta neither of them have played there regularly before they came to city.

He should know more than anyone that jonno is not ready to be playing yet and kompany is injured until september which leaves us done for if either ireland or barry pick up an injury. I swear i heard him say he would only sell when we had adequate cover for the necessary positions.
