Did you used to write letters when you were 'courting'?

I've spent many a warm summers day in doors, writing frightening verse, to a bucked tooth girl in Luxembourg.
Ah but there was also the "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" I was getting letters from while we were apart and planning a hitch-hiking tour of Italy that summer of 1970.
(She was too, if by Lowlands you include Ainsdale.)

I did but I was away at sea from the age of 17. We lived for those letters from home from family, friends and the latest girlfriend you'd met while on leave. The days before the internet and mobile phones it was our only contact with home, often for months. The scented ones were the best.

Just came on to say the same, letters from home got me through the darkest days of basic training. It was only the start of the 90's....but life was a lot more simple and far more enjoyable for being so.

They're from a time when the letters had SWALK on the back of the envelope, or sometimes BURMA or NORWICH.

There were fewer distractions for sure. I started my journeys in 1974. A different world then, at training in Gravesend I think there was one or two phones between 500 lads.

Technology/social media has been much more of a curse than a blessing IMO - The world is far more hateful, stressful, and selfish, and a lot less enjoyable as a consequence.

I'm definitely grateful for growing up in the era i did,we had more about us.

NORWICH. Alan Bennet did a great sketch based on the fact that “knickers” was spelt with a K.
”You see, that would be KORWICH…..”
No internet or mobiles in my day. We used pigeon post or sent a boy with a note.
