Diego Maradona

Sad news, he was the greatest player of all time imo. 60 isn't a bad knock though, all things considered.

Apparently the lockdown in Argentina just caused him to spiral into an alcoholic pit. People were really worried about him last month when he was hospitalised because he looked awful and it seems like either the damage was done, or he couldn't be pulled out of the spiral.

I'm torn between thinking 60 is tragically young and he was lucky to get there - both are probably true.

Wow. RIP. Fabulous footballer but his body could only take so much. I'm surprised he made it to 60 to be honest

RIP. Arguably the best player I’ve ever watched. Truly incredible footballer.

Pretty big news source reporting Maradona has died age 60.

Another big argentine news source had a journalist tweeting that medics were trying to revive him as of 10 minutes ago.

He apparently fell into very bad health during lockdown and was recently hospitalised for surgery on a blood clot on his brain.

It was just read out as a newsflash on LBC and they were quoting Associated Press as the source and its on the BBC Footie web page

interesting comparison of era's, i would sway that it's harder for footballers nowadays as they are up against sportsman that are in full health, beyond fit and train to the maximum, Messi is up against world-class players from all over the world, back in the 70's you had pro footballers smoking and going down the pub after the match! and Maradona would have played against some truly awful defences.

Not to say, he wasn't one of the greatest ever, he truly was

Along with the fact he's up against professionals, you also have to take into account how concentrated the best players have become at the top clubs. In Maradona's day, pre Bosman, pre super clubs, you didn't have teams with 11 world class players and more on the bench. There were pretty average players in every side he was up against, he'd certainly never encounter a team like the Real Madrid Messi did his best stuff against where every player is almost a household name worldwide with 50+ international caps.

But then again, what would Maradona have achieved with 10 world class players next to him? A lot of those Napoli players never got near international football, they just weren't that good.

Tactically as well, the game has trended towards defences. The number of goals in the game is lower than back then, which means Messi's goal numbers are even more absurd. How do you factor in Messi's consistency too? Absolutely unprecedented levels and he repeated it for over a decade.

No right answer really, a lot of it is about how old you are.

Rest in peace Crazy Diego.

Truly one of the greatest the world has ever seen. Such a shame he had such self-destructive tendencies.
