Its nearer 70% i believe but im just making the point that petrol rises with the price of oil and the current political (Middle East, Africa, US, Here and financial climate (World) has sky rocketed the price of oil over the last few years
It changes because the tax is mostly in-line with inflation whereas fuel prices most definitely aren't doing: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.abd.org.uk/taxtable.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.abd.org.uk/taxtable.htm</a> If there's a 50p increase the increase in tax is only 7p. The reason for the initial high price is tax then everything else is flutuation. The biggest effect currently is oil speculators: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-03-07/have-oil-speculators-already-priced-in-war-with-iran" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.businessweek.com/articles/20 ... -with-iran</a>

Anyone with half a brain knows politics affects the price of oil and thus petrol. Whether it's OPEC limiting supply or increasing it or whether it's conflict or whether it's embargoes. Entire conflicts have revolved around this very issue, it's explicitly political unless you've been sitting with your fingers in your ears on Mars.

Yep and you can guess where all that money goes because it certainly isn't on maintaining the roads.

emphasis on the word cheaper, they're not cheap.

it's just the government ripping us off and being extortionate, because they can and because too many people don't give a fuck anymore.

The majority, around 60%, of what we spend on petrol is tax.
That's as true but it would be unwise to say that the correlation does not equate to oil price being causative.

I moved to a 520d from 330ci for the same reason. Now when I'm off to see a client I tootle along at 56mph on the motorway behind a lorry and get 60mpg. Not bad considering it's a tank.

We're paying for a welfare system that rewards people for not working

totally agree....the welfare system is out of control and genuine people who try and access it when they need help dont get it...but generations of families have made a career out of milking the welfare system....we have redefined what poverty means in the UK and need to address this balance but not at the expense of genuine vulnerable people..
You will upset the museli knitters on here with statements like that.

The new beamers take the piss out of normality with there fuel consumption. Missus dad is getting 65mpg out of his new 520d due to some fuel efficient tyres being fitted
