So you dont have anything to back it up?

We can all talk in ideological terms and blame easy targets but it doesnt make it true.
I don't have to back up anything. You asked what that poster's comments had to do with diesel prices. I explained his trail of thoughts as it was very straight forward. I did not say whether I agreed or disagreed with them.

My post was simply to help of the hard of thinking when flummoxed by the argument.

The tax generated on diesel pays for many different things and to highlight one for point scoring is just pandering to the ignorant.

if those lazy fuckers in the public sector weren't so obsessed about working for three years and then getting a couple of hundred thousand pension a year for life once they retire at forty then we could slash the tax on diesel and make transport cheap and accessible for all.

I didn't say I agreed, as stated, I explained why he was mentioning it and explaining the trail of thought.

No. The welfare state, whilst bloated and not acting in the manner it was intended is only one part of the seemingly endless blackhole that is our country's finances.

But I understand his point whilst not agreeing wholeheartedly.

Slightly off topic here:

I need a new car.
-Prepared to spend 10k max
-Currently do 16k a year (vast majority is commuting between liverpool and manc)
- Looking at a second hand (less than 40k mileage) German car. Want some comfort/luxury and sick of Fords and french cars.
- Sport performance not a big factor but want somethng that looks ok.

Diesel or petrol?

I've heard many arguements from both sides, seams as if my annual mileage is on the border between the two but there is obviously facts to consider including higher prices of diesel motors, higher diese prices and maintenance issues with diesels such as turbos/filters etc.

cheers

Take into consideration the price of purchasing the car aswell. I was looking at one a couple of weeks ago and the Diesel version of exactly the same car worked out at about £1500 more expensive.

Buying a diesel doing that sort of millage makes sense
300 miles a week = 1 tank of fuel every two weeks in a good diesel.
You'll save about £1000 a year over a petrol car
