Dinner or lunch?

Was round there for around 30 minutes and asked if I had the day wrong as I thought they had invited me round for dinner but I couldn't smell anything being cooked.

I think their response included the word smartarse!!

‘Dinner’ comes from the Latin word Cena which was the Roman meal eaten around Noon.

Cena typically meant the main meal of the day, which used to be around lunchtime but is now mainly in the evening. The Italian word Cena (dinner) usually refers to the evening meal and pranzo is lunch (midday meal).

I see it that dinner is the main meal of the day and for most people it is eaten in the evening. It was probably called dinner in schools because for many children it was their main meal of the day (hence dinner ladies). Adults at work have lunch breaks and working lunches etc.
