Discuss Pellegrini (Pt 2)

The physicality of the side is quite awe-inspiring now. You forget just how monstrous a specimen Micah is when fit, because it has happened so rarely recently. Seeing him on the rampage last night is exciting, assuming we can find a way to get him on the field regularly.

If we can continue to use those attributes to bully all comers as we have done this week, we won't go far wrong. We have been a fearsome outfit in the last three games (for the most part) and need to continue that - if this side grows in confidence and realises what it is capable of, and opponents begin to fear us again like they did in the title winning season we could be close to unstoppable.

If we go to Villa Park and get pressed into submission again then it will be disappointing. Somehow I don't think that will happen this time though... The only wildcard is the Champions League game and the pressure Pellegrini is under to succeed in that competition - hopefully that doesn't mean we prioritise the Munich game enough to derail ourselves.

What we saw last night was a 2nd string side playing with the attitude and intensity which the first XI started the derby with. In many respects it was as important as the derby result in terms of what it signifies. What it showed me more than anything was that the squad have seen enough of the manager to buy into what he's trying to do and to go out and implement it.
TBH Billy, it could just be that squad players like Milner, Jovetic & Richards were out to impress and make a claim for a starting spot rather than the manager being a direct cause of the hunger we saw.

I don't know if you've seen earlier, Billy, but I'm foaming at the mouth with excitement for exactly the same reasons.

Every single player is suddenly looking at the top of their game. We have a recognisable system/style.

It was hugely noticeable last night that every single player celebrated every single goal together. Even the 4th and 5th. You could see clearly they were delighted for each other.

Something very special is happening at this club.

Don't know about Billy but I saw it and was actually, indirectly, referencing back to it with my last comment.

I've said from the off that Pelle needs time and that we should not rush to judgment one way or another but it is hard to contain one's excitement after Sunday's performance because that really was some performance and it was no fluke. We now need to see that attitude and belief consistently and, also away from home.

Yeah, you hit on another point there too, OB1. There have been question marks about the inclusion of some players at times but you can see now that everyone is getting a crack at the whip. The League Cup helps in that respect too.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun but you really sense that the manager is saying to them all "You will get your chances this season" and they are responding. They can see that players like Dzeko, Nasri, Kolorov, who might not be considered natural first choices, have been given runs and done well. It's going to be interesting how he rotates over the next few weeks, and if he does, can he keep up the quality. Rodwell and Jovetic might well come into the frame soon.

Its fairly normal though for managers to give players their chance at this stage of the season. But usually they arrive at their best starting 11, or best 12/13. Its at that stage that problems can arise. Will Dzeko still be happy if it becomes apparent that Negredo & Aguero are starting the really big games, he's playing and scoring in lesser matches? When Silva is fit and him, Nasri or Navas have to sit out a key game, will they be happy?

We have a big, strong squad. One of the radio commentators said yesterday that the 11 that started the game, as close as damn it to our second 11, would probably finish 8th in the league. Players are not going to be picked as often as they want and in the games that they want to play. Its only then that the we'll know how good is the spirit in the squad and how good the manager is at man management.

I think you have to give opportunities in cups to the likes of Garcia, Lescott etc. They need to be ready to step straight into the team.

I was disappointed the likes of Negredo and Navas were on the bench instead of some kids but looking back in hindsight the run out was probably exactly what they needed to help settle into the club and style of play.

It's up to Pelle to motivate everybody each week and reward players by making them share the bigger matches. Obviously if it came down to a Cup Final then somebody will have to sit it out, but that's where these guys winning in the League Cup gets them a chance to carry on to Wembley and win a trophy and get a day out.

Ultimately the team that played United may not be as effective when playing Chelsea or Spurs at home, but every player has to keep being motivated and keep performing to give Pelle the confidence and option of putting them in in those big games when he needs to switch it up.

I was delighted he played a bench like that. It eliminated any prospect of losing the tie. It showed how much he values the competition for the squad, and because it's a trophy. And as you say, we are growing into a City "style" and it continues that development.

Have to admit - this is extremely promising and it would be churlish not to recognise the influence of Pellegrini in this improvement. Ultimately the away results against Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manure will be the real test. But keep improving like this and it will be ours to lose.

How many managers share out the big games? They don't, they pick their best players.

Explains why Mata and Kagawa have been sat on the bench in recent big games, and why Mourinho played Altintop in an El Clasico one time.

You big your best team to beat the opposition, not your best concoction of players.

Silva doesn't get in the team on current performances and shouldn't walk back into it, he should earn the right by bucking his ideas up and starting to play like he did 2 years ago instead of the mediocrity we've been served up since.
