Amazed at people criticising Pelleers. I've been very critical of his tactical decisions before but he got it spot on today. He knew united would come at us, with two of our best players out, and he set us up to contain them and hit them on the counter. Now we did one of those jobs very well today; we defended very well. However we didn't do the other particularly very well at all as Sterling, De Burnye and Bony were our worst players. Most importantly we got at least what we came for, 1 point.

Top of the league. Well done Maunel.

If you take a couple of steps back and look at the big picture, despite being crap today in every area aside from the back/middle two, this is a good sign...

Defense has been very shaky for way too long, and if this is the start of finally adressing this, then its a good thing. However it will also mean a period of looking a bit gash.

As someone else said above silva returning will help in a big way, but i honestly don't think yaya fits into a solid defensive setup, he just doesn't use his legs enough...delph returning will be an interesting one in this kind of system, along with a much improved fernando going about his business.

Then again it could just be the system UTD use sucking the life from this particular game, rather than any change being put in place by pellers.

I'm sure if Utd had come out & played proper attacking football, City would have done the same. But we've been taken for mugs by Utd last season, Spurs, Juve, allowing them to keep 70% of their team in defensive positions but still score goals due to us trying to play like Real Madrid rather than just taking the points & making them come out & play.

I recon if we'd scored one today, we'd have got 4. Utd aee a miserable, dour, parasitic team & we didn't fall for their bloodsucking plan.

It was good to see a pragmatic side to Pellegrini today, if we can defend like that as a team with Aguero and Silva included we might have a chance in the Champions League.

I was pleased with Pellegrini today. Shame it has taken so long for him to realise that there are occasions when that kind of display is appropriate. I can think of a few other games in the last few years where he should have done the same to be honest. I have no doubt if one of Silva or Aguero was fit today he would have gone for it a lot more and we would probably have won. But it is absolutely correct to change tactics to suit the situation.

Correct. The fact that Kevin and Stirling had stinkers today didn't help. If either of these had had even a half decent game then we would have won, so a point is ok by me

Spot on that formation is what we should play in certain games, just needs tinkering slightly (different players in)you can't keep trying to blitz teams all the time in games...

Really interesting comments in the post match interview from mp. He seemed to say that he didnt like to play defensively ( we all know that) but he was seeimng to say that we didnt have much choice or that something has forced him to set up that way(injuries). I wonder if he is now coming around to the way of thinking that without silva and kun plus the waning attacing force that is yaya we just dont have the replacements to play the way he wants to. (Esp with the squad injuries)

It would be really interesting to see what mp would have put out with a fully fit squad including delph as im not sure where he fits in when everyone is fit but he has something that we dont get from yaya and thats legs.

I still think yaya is a must in a starting 11 but played deeper and not in the silva role.....

Manuel Pellegrini admitted the derby stalemate at Old Trafford went against all his footballing instincts – but declared himself satisfied with an away point.

City were forced into a rare rearguard action against United in the second half, with man-of-the-match Nicolas Otamendi and skipper Vincent Kompany flawless in central defence, as they returned to the top of the Premier League table.

Chilean Pellegrini prides himself not only on the results, but the style of his side’s performance so there were mixed emotions from the boss after the game.

He said: “The first half we played better, the same level as United. In the second half we started to lose so many balls, we lost possession of the ball. In that case it’s important to concentrate on defending and not to allow them to create chances, and in that sense we did it well.

“We worked well, United had possession but they didn’t have too many chances. They broke through, they also hit the bar and had a chance at the near post when Joe saved but other than that it was just possession.

“I am satisfied with a point but I don’t like to play in this way. That’s way I say it’s easy to play that way. It’s important to have a point here, another point in the table, but I don’t think it’s the way the team must play.”

Asked what he didn’t like, Pellegrini said: “Not to have good possession in the second half as we did in the first. But I repeat it’s a difficult team and we’re playing away. If you can’t win it then don’t lose it by not concentrating.

“It’s not a bad day. It’s always difficult to play here at United’s stadium, it’s difficult for every team. If we drew at home maybe I wouldn’t be happy, but in this moment it’s a good point, we concentrated well and defended well. Maybe a lot of media criticise that but we can do it also.

“If we want to defend we can defend. We don’t like to, we like to be an attacking team.”

Bang on. Wonder if it will rub off into the CL.

Edit: Just saw the comments above, I guess not :D
