Discussion: Manuel Pellegrini 2015/16

The problems Pellegrini faces in terms of criticism from City supporters - and the criticism various players get - has been done to death. The guy has never been able to win and, as I have stated before, that is one very big reason why I try to focus on his positives rather than his negatives. Yesterday, we saw his faults exploited to a level that in fact does not happen often. His modus operandi is to try and stick to a way of playing and he does do it for a reason, which you can like or dislike; however, City have consistently struggled against sides that press really hard (it was also the case under Mancini) and with the current squad it is hard to excuse him not picking a different starting line-up and approach for this game, so I won't.

That said, I do think that his players have performed poorly in ways that are not excused by the manager's team selection or tactics so you could say they let him down, again. The first City goal, which the team never recovered from, contained two crucial individual errors that cannot be blamed on the manager.

I suspect that yesterday may have delivered a mortal blow to Pellegrini if the plan is not already to replace him at the end of the season. I just hope that the club is not found to have made a big mistake in not going for Klopp when he was free in the summer. In the meantime, City still have everything to play for and Pellegrini needs to ensure that his team do not lose two games or two league games in a row. The priority in Turin needs to be a clean sheet and he needs to pick a side that is fit for purpose.

I don't think Klopp's style is right for a club like City. It works better with players who have something to prove rather than established stars. And it is often squashed by managers who put some thought into it.

You are right of course about the individual errors. But does it not bring about more individual errors when you pick completely the wrong team ?

If that had been a cricket match, Pellegrini would be under investigation for match fixing along with Mangala & Demichelis. Klopp would pick that opposition in his dreams.

He can't say publically what he knows and we all know. I think his half time subs tell you what he really thinks.
Which doesn't tell us why after 18 months or so of yaya being a liability in that role he's still starting a match like last night with that line up. Either he hasn't sussed it in all that time but miraculously after 45 mins last night the penny has dropped or the penny just hasn't dropped yet for those fans who think he's going to stop lining us up like that again.

Still woke up this morning absolutely raging!! It could have been 8!!! That's the scary part! There is no excuse for that performance yesterday and the fact that Manuel says he would still pick the same team is staggering! Every city fan in the world would have feared the worst when that team was announced and with good reason! Picking MDM ahead of otamendi and then leaving dinho on the bench and playing yaya in a midfield two was atrocious! He has no tactical nous and just expects to out score the opposition and has no plan B. He has a great bloke who stabilized and brought the playing squad together again but his time has come imo. That was the worst city performance since mansour took over and yes Merlin and vinny were missing but we have top class players who can come in!! The players seemed uncomfortable and unhappy from the start with the team selection and not changing it after going one nil down showed his stubbornness. The season we won the title city played some of the best attacking football I have ever seen and it was a joy to watch BUT it still took the dippers to capitulate for us to win the title that season! He's a great bloke and we all have a soft spot for him but world class manager? Nah not for me, ancelloti should be brought in asap imo

I think 3 seasons is enough to decide if a manager will take you into bigger things. The scousers applied that rule with Rodgers, we should do this with Pellegrini. He's been given the tools whilst he has been here, still not sure he knows how to accommodate De Bruyne into the side to get the most out of him. Won't drop Yaya or leaves him high and dry up against a team with legs. If he doesn't win the league this year he should go. We don't look like champions at the moment but I'm at a loss to think of team that will finish above us as everyone else looks so poor.

The bottom line is he believes in that system because he repeats the same mistake time after time in crucial matches. There also seems to be a deadly complacency in the team. But we cannot replace a whole team mid season.

A team that grinds out results while not playing well perhaps? You may not want to think it but if ourselves and Arsenal carry on like we are it's the most likely outcome.

Not complacent, just criminally mis-managed to the point where player ability and psychology has been badly damaged.

Lol.

That is the terrifying, awful truth. He is going to do it again. We don't know where or when but it will be just when we are least expecting it..

Conceding 4 goals in the last 20 prem league games when the last time we conceded 4 was in August 2008 is dreadful. The defence needs addressing but he isn't the man to address it.

Our record in 2015 against the so called better clubs is awful

Against the other top 4 sides from last year 1 win in 5 and that against a side that has lost 9 other games in all comps this season.

Throw in Spurs and Liverpool.

Two wins in 9.

This includes two 4-1 results and a 4-2.

Is anyone seeing anything that makes you think this will change any time soon?

13 points dropped in the last 8 league games with 13 goals conceded.

That's mid table form and you wonder at what point it becomes a crisis for Pellegrini.
