Do Aliens actually exist ?

The reason I think they may not exist is that surely they would have contacted us by now, not us contact them. We are still babies in terms of evolution and our technology in terms of space travel etc is rubbish. Other planets could be millions of years more advanced. Surely they would have the capabilities to contact us. I just think if there was aliens they would have let us know by now.

The reason I do think they exist is, well, surely they do. The universe is huge. It’s unimaginable that we are the only ones.

So In conclusion.... I dunno haha.

Just as trying to stretch a physical too far, too soon is not such a great idea, introducing a concept that is too far beyond someone's belief systems
will bring too much conflict, fear, freaking out etc. So, one possibility is that aliens coming into public contact would freak out humanity and in
ways that would not be of benefit to humans or aliens. On the other hand, I find it conceivable that the belief in aliens could be a result of
very conflicted minds. So, who knows?

couple of points to this,

1) They could have found us and decided against contacting us for what ever reason, not advanced enough etc etc?
2) There tech and our tech are so different we're just missing the messages ( and vice versa ). we assume that because we're sending radio waves out they will see them, however if they are millions of years more advanced than us then they probably moved beyond similar tech millions of years back too, assuming they ever used similar.

One of the best theories i've heard was a mate pointing out, maybe we are the Klingons of the galaxy and Alien races are afraid to contact us as it would make us aware they are there and we would attempt to fight them on a whim!.

Other best comedy theory is we're a giant reality TV show for them, and a lot of the fucked up things going on are them trying to make things interesting to view.

You seem acquainted with the theory - but your subsequent remarks are puzzling.

I open my argument with the possibility - indeed the likelihood - that the universe is infinite - in some of the ways that it's infinite, sentient life might not exist beyond our planet - though, I think, extremely unlikely - in some of the ways that the universe may be infinite, other sentient lifeforms are guaranteed.

Probably sentient life is guaranteed in any universe where there is not some sort of constraint limiting intelligence to our own planet.

I think you're in much stronger position to suppose the following: in the observable universe, that is the universe we can view constrained by the speed of light and by the finite age of the universe, no life exists other than our own which is capable or on the cusp of interstellar transport.

I think that premise is highly unlikely too but it's at least tenable; perhaps this is what you are arguing.

Where did you get this "Likelihood that the universe is infinite" from? I don't think it's likely at all. We just don't know.

But moving past that, what you say is obvious - that the chances of there being intelligent life somewhere in a finite universe are clearly less than the chances of their just being life of some primitive kind.

Latest thinking on the drake equation suggests that we may very well be all alone:

When we take account of realistic uncertainty, replacing point estimates by probability distributions that reflect current scientific understanding, we find no reason to be highly confident that the galaxy (or observable universe) contains other civilizations, and thus no longer find our observations in conflict with our prior probabilities. We found qualitatively similar results through two different methods: using the authors’ assessments of current scientific knowledge bearing on key parameters, and using the divergent estimates of these parameters in the astrobiology literature as a proxy for current scientific uncertainty. When we update this prior in light of the Fermi observation, we find a substantial probability that we are alone in our galaxy, and perhaps even in our observable universe (53%–99.6% and 39%–85% respectively).

There's actually serious scientific debate as to whether this is genuinely true. Or at least that everything is just one big computer simulation.

Correct aliens coming here taking our jobs. Send em back :)
