Do people care if "Live" music is mimed or "canned"

I like live music to sound live and I'm not looking for a perfect reproduction of a recorded album and I'm happy to hear stripped back or raw versions of the songs if necessary. But if someone has paid big money to see a show on a huge long tour then i can see why the artist wants all the help they can get to put on a good show.

Broadway, The West End, cruise ships, touring acts, even major rock shows like Trans Siberian Orchestra, overproduced tech metal shows, and most of the top 40 Billboard artists - they're all running a click track."

I mean this seems like 2 very different things. A click track is just a metronome in the background to help them stay in time. I've got no problem with that, especially if it's a huge gig or production.

Miming is not acceptable, I pay money to hear a band play live, not listen to the album through shit speakers surrounded by thousands of people.

Don't think it would apply to anyone I'm likely to pay to see though.

I am sure a few bands use backing tracks these days and even for stuff like backing vocals. Kiss have been doing this for about the last three years since Paul Stanley’s voice went. He sings some bits but not others. I won’t pay to see mimed vocals.

Yeah it can be used as just a metronome, but also it is used to trigger for backing tapes, encompassing vocals and things like pyrotechnics in exactly the right place. The soundboard is governed by the click track.

Pro musicians don't really need click tracks or metronomes for purely timing purposes, they have a drummer for that.

To be fair, keeping a beat can be difficult on stage with a big crowd.
There are also echoes from speakers that make it difficult.

I get it on cruise ships that music is pre recorded.
Never been on a cruise ship with live bands on (though I keep getting adverts for an 80's cruise with a flock of seagulls and ABC etc on facebook) but imagine how long it would take for a band to come on and do their gig.... take down the equipment and then the next band come on..... tune up and sound check and then play and repeat the scenario how ever many times a day

I guess if you know before hand its gonna be mimed, like some pop bands obviously are and you are happy to pay for the ticket then thats fine. However if the band/artist is putting everything into the song and has publised the performance is live and is obviously lip syncing then thats lying to the audience at best and taking money through false pretences at worst, shows an incredible lack of integrity if a band is supposed to be live but actually isn't.

I personally would not go to a gig if I knew that the the band were going to be miming.

Apart from Milli Vanilli of course, I would go and watch them - who wouldn't?
