That’s been around a long time. Scotrail is now under public ownership, I believe, and NS, the Dutch rail provider, has its own problems, with strikes across the country. That said ticket prices do tend to be far more reasonable in the Netherlands, and that in turn encourages people to travel more and spread their money around the country.

It's free anywhere for students in the Netherlands on any train.

Saves them a lot of money as most live at home in a small country.

Yes, students can choose to travel for free during weekdays or to travel for free at the weekends, and they can also travel more cheaply on Eurostar and Thalys, buses too. Even ‘normal’ people can buy an annual discount card (~70€) and travel off-peak, weekends, and summer months at 40% off. There’s no marked difference between 1st and 2nd class services and buffet services are practically non-existent, but when the distances to travel are relatively short, such services carry less significance.

Remember when Shapps - and a few other Tories went on TV to deplore this? Well this is what Shapps and other Tories are going on TV to promote in the rail industry now. Any normal worker who thinks they have their backs needs to give their head a wobble
