Do you support the RMT?

If I was the RMT and ASLEF, I would get together so one of them is representing the drivers and the other the "support" staff. That way, it is clear to the public who is protesting and why.

Aslef is a union exclusively for drivers. RMT used to be the the Transport and General Workers Union and represented all other grades.

Over the years, some train drivers moved over to RMT because they are cheaper, or because they were unhappy with ASLEF, (much larger number of members so can afford to have a cheaper monthly subscription. But the percentage of drivers is very small.)

Hope that explains things a bit.

Thanks-it does.

As for the 32 hour week, fatigue is a major issue in some industries. The job I had was conditioned to a 33 hour week, but we never actually worked a normal week so it was averaged out. The roster would start with 2 shifts meaning a wake up at anything from 0400 to 0600, followed by 2 that would end at 2200-2330 followed by either 2 nights or another 2 0600 starts and then 4 days off. Up until about 50yo, it was OK, after that and after doing many years of those shifts it was really knackering and taking its' toll. It was a safety critical role with little margin for error.

Early starts and very late finishes are a recipe for disaster especially if they are mixed around. We, as a union, did everything we could to ensure, as far as possible, that the duties progressed from early to late. I can fully understand if it's not a "progressive" roster why 32 hours would be an aim.
ASLEF represent the drivers. RMT represents all grades within the railway.

Personally I'd love to see them merge but there's more chance of peace in Palestine as every time it's been tabled someone from either union will quote how the other one shafted it's members in 1875...

The power of a single railway union would be immense if used wisely.

But when both unions are in dispute with the companies, industrial action can be coordinated such that one union could strike on one day and the other on the next. Two days of no trains and only one day's loss of pay per striking workers.

In theory.

Indeed.

That's what we did at the start of the last national rail strike.

The law makes it difficult to coordinate any kind of action nowadays and it has to be 100% legitimate or both unions could be sequested.

I applaud ASLEF for getting in the new personal break rule at ours. Drivers cannot be more than 2 and half hours away from facilities. At our place that's got diagrams improved to adhere to it as we have some diagrams upto current maximum working hours before a break.

No. They're paid a relative fortune.
Starmer and Labour gave in, and yet they still want more. They can just fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

I could probably say the same about you!
Another one with a mill owner's attitude. It's not the 1800s.

What is they want, a 32 hr week and still get their current pay with an over inflation pay rise, or do they drop their pay by the 3 to 4 hours and make it up in overtime?

The RMT aren't affiliated to the Labour Party.

Were were expelled 20 years ago for having the audacity to call Blair a **** and agreeing to only support politicians with our shared interests.

Still doesn't mean I don't think they should fuck off. No sympathy whatsoever - except when it comes to abusive passengers.
