Lot of disquiet from our NEU members yesterday as advised to accept 6.5%. Told we’d “got a good deal and further action unlikely to shift government “. Gone to electronic ballot now as to whether it’s accepted or not. FeelIng from other teacher unions:
NAHT will definitely accept
ASCL likewise
NASUWT highly likely to accept
NEU: We’ll see but I’m not convinced it’ll be accepted.

Northern undermine ticket office consultation at stations

RMT has been prevented from campaigning for ticket offices to remain open at some stations run by train operator Northern.

Posters have been ripped down and a public petition was removed from Workington station by rail bosses, despite the fact RMT members across the country are actively campaigning to save their jobs.

Over 2000 jobs are being cut, 1000 ticket offices closed and the whole scale de-staffing of the railway industry is being proposed.

Condemning the move by Northern, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "These disgraceful actions by Northern bosses show just how worried they are that the consultation is not going their way.

"We've received huge support in every town village and city from across the political spectrum for ticket offices to be kept open.

"Over 100,000 have signed petitions in support of RMT's campaign to save ticket offices and to maintain a human railway that is well staffed.

"Northern and the rail fat cats are only interested in extracting as much profit as possible and they are determined to use whatever methods they have to disrupt the public exercising their view on the future of ticket offices.

"We will be writing to Northern for an explanation."

RMT Press Office:

RMT report finds that between 2006 and 2022, the train operating companies invested just 1% of the money spent on the railways.

Train company bosses take little risk with their capital but have benefited from profits before tax, of 126% of the capital invested by rail operators.

65% of profits are locked away in shareholder dividends instead of being redistributed into improving the railway or upping workers wages and improving conditions.

The report comes on the day of the latest strike action by 20,000 railway workers in a long running dispute on pay jobs and working conditions.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Train companies invest little or nothing in our railways and make completely unjustifiable profits which they squirrel away in shareholder dividends and bosses pay packets.

"It is a scandal that the travelling public is being ripped off by greedy rail privateers while at the same time the government oversees a corrupt system and prolongs a rail dispute for political reasons.

"It is high time this profits bonanza gravy train was halted, a deal done with the RMT and the railways returned to public ownership for the good of the country and railway workers."
