This government said years ago that all TOCs should do split fare pricing but it's never happened. Better still is to have fares that don't need a split to be cheaper.

I used to do it in trainspotting days to the east coast main line. The hard way. No day return from London Road to Retford so Day Return to Sheffield Victoria then leg it to the booking office for a Day Return to Retford.

I've seen machines in London not offering the "after 10.30 am" ticket before 10.30.
This may be the same thing - not being in the timeslot that the ticket is valid means it isn't made available. The rationale is that it stops people buying a ticket that isn't valid.

14.1 Some Tickets specifically exclude their use in conjunction with other Tickets. This will be made clear in the terms and conditions when buying such Tickets
14.2 Unless Condition 14.1 applies, you may use a combination of two or more Tickets to make a journey provided that the train services you use Call at the station(s) where you change from one Ticket to another

Not forgetting The Summary:

The key responsibilities of Train Companies (‘we’) are:
• Prior to departure and during your journey, we will make available information that will help you to plan and successfully complete your journey on the National Rail Network. This will wherever possible be done in a way in which people with sight and/or hearing difficulties can understand.
• We will make available clear information about the range of Tickets to help you make a well-informed choice about the most appropriate and best value Ticket for your journey.


What if the passenger knows what they want? I gave someone a note to give to the guard on a Cross-Country train to split their Oakham-Exeter ticket into 5 separate tickets - no problem. That was 4 years ago, mind.

But rules don't apply to them. As the decision to ignore collective bargaining rights and close ticket offices proves.

Yeah, some machines elsewhere won't sell tickets for the 9.31 train till 9.30.... (and won't tell people at 9.29 that a cheaper ticket is available from 9.30). But it would probably sell the offpeak ticket for it the day before.

Imagine a family with no car going to Towyn caravan park for a holiday - buying a very expensive ticket to West Wales because the machine can't tell them they want Rhyl.

I think the only thing that still applies in Tory Brexit land is a big Television. Consumer appliances have never been cheaper.

If you are under 40 you get paid relatively fuck all for even decent middle class jobs and you can't get an affordable family home.

One danger with those tickets that they never point out is if you decide not to travel and refund them.

Most tickets come with a £10 charge knocked off for a refund.

So if you had say one £100 return, you’d get £90 back if you couldn’t go.

If you bought 3 X singles outbound and 3 X singles return. You might get the price down to £90 but that would be £60 knocked off if you refunded them.
