Does the captains role mean anything now?

Willy, Demichelis, Otamendi, Zaba, Navas, Aguero, Fernandinho were all on the pitch when he got the armband, 6 fluent spanish speaker and i'm fairly certain Fernandinho knows it as well, so 7 people and Silva means we had 8 spanish speakers on the pitch when he was captain. The fact his english isn't too good shouldn't matter. I'd also be shocked by now if our other players hadn't learned a bit of spanish.
You can aa Clichy. He speaks Spench. :)

He's my favorite ever city player but I can't imagine him pushing the team over the line in a battle. Amazing player but not who I'd point to as a captain. Captaincy is about personality and leadership more than footballing ability although admittedly it helps.

Indeed it's all about this. I wish we had half the team capable of being captain and not just relying on Kompers. I think that Yaya has not the best qualities to carry it off!

I reckon about half of our team know next to no Spanish.
I can't imagine this is accurate. There are 7 players from Spain or Argentina who obviously speak it as their first language. 4 players from France and 2 from the Ivory Coast who speak French as their first language -- there are significant similarities in the two languages. Then add on another 2 who speak Portuguese as their first language which is even closer to Spanish than French is. Right away, you're looking at 15 players who would speak conversational football Spanish with no training. You have two Belgian players who speak French fluently and therefore by proxy would also fall into this camp as well.

So 17 of our 24 first team players undoubtedly speak some varying amount of Spanish, certainly enough to communicate with ease on the pitch with no additional training required. 4 of the 5 first team staff speak it as their primary language. You'd probably have to try hard to actually not pick up some with a team make up like City's.

we have had some real leaders over the years , Book , Doyle, Watson , Morrison , to name a few , Vinny or Zabba would not look out of place amongst these players , but when someone like Yaya Toure is named captain , then it belittles any meaning of the word , he doesnt exactly lead by example , although a brilliant individual player , team ethic is well down his list of priorities . This team is ageing and not sure where out next leader will come from when vinny or zabs hang up their boots , no doubt we will be investing heavily in the squad over the next few years , and another leader will come to the fore , but every successful team has a captain that leads by example , as vinny's absence has proved

I don't think Zab has ever been captain under Pellegrini has he? It was Mancini that had him as vice captain. For some reason Zab is a long way back in the captain list. I don't really like keepers having it as they can't really do the role as effectively, you can't have them running upto the ref having a word every foul otherwise Joe is the obvious choice. Personally, i'd like Fernandinho to have it when Kompany isn't fit. Leads by example.

But didn't it go to Zab when Silva went off ?

Can't see that it means anything, or has done for some time. If we didn't have a captain, I for one wouldn't give a fuck.

He may not even be in the squad yet, but who will our captain be after the days of Vinny, Yaya and Zab?

Only people in England or who watch English football attach so much importance to the captain's role. Elsewhere it's more of a senior player thing.

I've never saw the point of it really and think mainly it's for people whose best advice is "run around more" and "shout at him".

Joe's got the passion and competitiveness for it I just feel it's better to have an outfield player hold the captaincy.

Why? this is a completely imagined problem that only exists in people's heads. Some of the most successful captains in the world are goalkeepers. I never see Buffon struggling, or Lloris.

When Vinny is captaining, the role means alot, and i don't think this question would be raised.

Everyone's is just having a go in the meantime, keeping the band warm for him while he's out.

It's not that it would affect his success I just think when talking with the ref, calming teammates down, taking orders from the manager, etc. it's easier for an outfield player to be the captian. As I said, I think Joe would make a brilliant and deserving captain, I just think it is better to have someone other than a goalkeeper hold the captaincy.

It does have a point these days though, as its the go to person for the officials if they need to deal with anything, and the captain is the only one supposed to be allowed to speak the referee about any decisions, so everyone needs one, whether or not its relevant as a team thing.

As far as the team go, as someone said above we should have 11 captains on the pitch during a game.

I prefer a defender or a midfield player being the captain .
Kompany a definite captain

Zabaleta a definite captain

Fernandinho a definite captain .

Kolarov a definite captain .

I've played basketball to a reasonable level here and America. I have been vice captain and captain.

I've played football and rugby and not been adorned an arm band, yet I still feel the need and do take charge and do so every time I compete. I have played every sport above with lads far better than I yet not all of them can communicate, lead, cajole, inspire or deliver instructions when it matters.

Quite often some of them out rank me in a military sense, yet take a back seat in sport.

I think it does matter, but even if Kompany is on the pitch we can still have others that can lead.

Those for me are, Komps, Zaba, Hart - but after that I feel we are struggling for natural leaders.

Fernandinho and Delph would be possibilities. Probably Otamendi but not sure of his command of the English language.

A captain should be able to command the respect of other players, for me Kompany is the epitome of everything you want in a captain. It's not about being the best player, it's about the dedication to the team and leading by example. Zabaleta would be my choice, simply because he's worked so hard to improve himself as a player and by doing that the other players have complete respect for him. Silva, doesn't matter how hard he's kicked, how many times he's roughed up, he gets up brushes himself down and fights back and is just as brave on the ball two seconds later. Hart, another who has had tough times but fought back and earned his place back in the team and the respect of his teammates.
