Does the captains role mean anything now?

Willy, Demichelis, Otamendi, Zaba, Navas, Aguero, Fernandinho were all on the pitch when he got the armband, 6 fluent spanish speaker and i'm fairly certain Fernandinho knows it as well, so 7 people and Silva means we had 8 spanish speakers on the pitch when he was captain. The fact his english isn't too good shouldn't matter. I'd also be shocked by now if our other players hadn't learned a bit of spanish.
You can aa Clichy. He speaks Spench. :)

He's my favorite ever city player but I can't imagine him pushing the team over the line in a battle. Amazing player but not who I'd point to as a captain. Captaincy is about personality and leadership more than footballing ability although admittedly it helps.

Indeed it's all about this. I wish we had half the team capable of being captain and not just relying on Kompers. I think that Yaya has not the best qualities to carry it off!

I reckon about half of our team know next to no Spanish.
I can't imagine this is accurate. There are 7 players from Spain or Argentina who obviously speak it as their first language. 4 players from France and 2 from the Ivory Coast who speak French as their first language -- there are significant similarities in the two languages. Then add on another 2 who speak Portuguese as their first language which is even closer to Spanish than French is. Right away, you're looking at 15 players who would speak conversational football Spanish with no training. You have two Belgian players who speak French fluently and therefore by proxy would also fall into this camp as well.

So 17 of our 24 first team players undoubtedly speak some varying amount of Spanish, certainly enough to communicate with ease on the pitch with no additional training required. 4 of the 5 first team staff speak it as their primary language. You'd probably have to try hard to actually not pick up some with a team make up like City's.

we have had some real leaders over the years , Book , Doyle, Watson , Morrison , to name a few , Vinny or Zabba would not look out of place amongst these players , but when someone like Yaya Toure is named captain , then it belittles any meaning of the word , he doesnt exactly lead by example , although a brilliant individual player , team ethic is well down his list of priorities . This team is ageing and not sure where out next leader will come from when vinny or zabs hang up their boots , no doubt we will be investing heavily in the squad over the next few years , and another leader will come to the fore , but every successful team has a captain that leads by example , as vinny's absence has proved

I don't think Zab has ever been captain under Pellegrini has he? It was Mancini that had him as vice captain. For some reason Zab is a long way back in the captain list. I don't really like keepers having it as they can't really do the role as effectively, you can't have them running upto the ref having a word every foul otherwise Joe is the obvious choice. Personally, i'd like Fernandinho to have it when Kompany isn't fit. Leads by example.

But didn't it go to Zab when Silva went off ?

Can't see that it means anything, or has done for some time. If we didn't have a captain, I for one wouldn't give a fuck.

He may not even be in the squad yet, but who will our captain be after the days of Vinny, Yaya and Zab?
