What’s so ironic about citizenship stances like this is how they mirror the stances of rich kids who inherit so much wealth they never need to work — the true bane of the capitalism you decry. They don’t have to make any hard decisions, they can afford to sit back and let the world pass them by while they turn their nose up at everything and anything because it doesn’t suit them, boo hoo. In the real world where the rest of us live, we have to make difficult choices among unpalatable options every day, and feel lucky when the choice is very clear because it makes our job as citizens easier. The key words in your screed are that you “can’t be arsed.” We know, we know. A slovenly, lazy approach to citizenship is part and parcel of everyone in the “they all suck” crowd, whether aggressively socialist, or Libertarian. “The parties don’t represent me” or “politicians don’t have my interest at heart” — yeah, that’s right — they don’t represent me either. It isn’t about you or me. It’s about representing ALL of us, not just you. Even failing that, surely one is closer to representing you than another — in nearly every election. Determining that sometimes takes, you know, effort.
Also, liars irritate me. Actually — that’s not fair. You probably aren’t lying — you just haven’t looked especially hard at yourself. I’m guessing you don’t “fear” capitalism taking down democracy — you want capitalism to continue to provide you with sustenance while you live in a free, Democratic society that allows you to whine and moan about “the system.” You don’t fear it, you actually LOVE it.
Now if you were to show up here today depressed and angered because Bernie Sanders didn’t get the nomination but you’re throwing in with Biden because you recognize Trump is by far and away the greater danger to the people and governmental constructs of the Western world, I’d have no quibble. If you can’t see that this election is about politics second and personality first, then yes — there’s something wrong. To fix it, start doing some homework like the rest of us.
By the way, capitalism isn’t destroying discourse — technology is, and destroying is the wrong word, unless you’re talking about the quality control governor evil capitalist editors at media outlets used to provide before the democratization of the bully pulpit which allowed radical fringe voices and liars to attain vast, free audiences with instant distribution and nearly unlimited reach. That governor HAS been destroyed — or was never created, or retroactively applied lamely (cf. your thoughtful comments in that otherwise wholly chickenshit media censorship thread).
