This is where segregation was introduced and they were put in place simply to remind the blacks where they stood and as a symbol of intimidation. A number of the statues are in towns which had never been visited by the person portrayed. I agree that history should be maintained (where relevant) but the later statues should be removed. There are some towns that are moving them to museums and even placing them in confederency graveyards.

that the civil war was solely about slavery, that the North were the goodies, and the Confederacy was pure evil,and that Lincoln
