Donald Trump

Someone asked me before on one of these threads what happens to the GOP if Trump loses. And I don't really have a clue. Could it splinter into MAGA and non-MAGA factions? That seems like the logical thing but both elements would know doing that is political suicide. Since MAGA is a personality cult, I suspect if Trump can be marginaliz(s)ed or goes to prison or dies, MAGA fades pretty hard without an obvious talisman replacement, so over time I expect moderation in the GOP to prevail, but that may take a very long time. Assuming Harris wins -- which I'm not -- and assuming she wins big -- which I also am not -- I think the next target blues will turn their eyes to is the Supreme Court. The pressure on Thomas to resign should step up meaningfully; the pressure on Roberts to develop a more stringent ethical code for jurists should be turned up to a boil.

I only asked because there is an understandable sense that Harris must win. I just don't get the feeling this thing is over, even if she does win.

Maybe if she wins bigly .....

Trump can still be involved from jail, is that right?

I suppose but let's not be silly -- he's not a viable candidate wearing an orange jumpsuit.

I think while we joke a bit about him pleading insanity or impaired functionality this is what will happen in some way -- certainly he'll make a show of it ala Harvey Weinstein.

Also, as others (and I) have pointed out -- he is likely in terrible, terrible financial shape too.

He will never wear orange or see the inside of a jail, I imagine. Maybe I should have said confinement, or house-arrest. There is nothing legally to stop him being involved post-conviction, is there?

I don't know the US system - would he have to show up in court to prove cognitive impairment?

Yeah! Orange just doesn’t suit him.
It’s not his colour.
