Donald Trump

I think good liberal people view it this way. Practicing Christians don't. For the record, 'tolerance' is a Christian ethic, "inclusion" is not.

I take your point on hypocrisy. But believing all the precepts of Christianity, even if you fall short of upholding them, is exactly what makes you a Christian.

But pretending it changes with the winds of new age understanding, is exactly what is not a Christian.

The Y'allQueda types you make fun of who talk to Jesus daily and understand all things through that prism... Yes, those are the Christians!
Christians, by definition, are those that believe that Jesus Christ is their lord and saviour.

All the rest is cherry picked by the individual.

Just Googled religious groups according to political affiliation. Here's just the Christian groups:

Catholic: 44% / 37% in favour of Dems
Mainline Protestant: 44% / 40% in favour of Reps
Black Protestant: 80% / 10% in favour of Dems
Orthadox Christian: 44% / 34% in favour of Dems
Jehovah's Witness: 18% / 7% in favour of Dems (but 75% no affiliation)
Evangelical Protestant: 56% / 28% in favour of Reps
Mormon: 70% / 19% in favour of Reps

Of course every non-Christian religion is overwhelmingly Democrat as well. Republicans are more likely to claim to be religious, claim that religion is important in their life, and claim to attend a religious service every week (although Christopher Hitchens had the line that if you added up the number of people who claimed to go to church once a week, there wouldn't be enough room in all the churches to fit them in).

When we talk about religion in politics, what we're not actually talking about is belief, but the desire or willingness to use politics to impose that belief on everyone else. Considering religion a private, personal thing does not make you less religious than someone who relishes any opportunity to bang on about it and use it to tell you how to vote.

I'm guessing that's where you got your stats.

You can just go on down and view the charts that follow

As we now look on the Roman and Greek gods as myths, where once they were worshipped, the same will happen to Christianity, Islam etc

There's no doubt a lot of people are hardwired to believe.
It's great comfort to people that they'll see their loved ones in the after life. But that doesn't make it true.

In addition whilst Jesus in my view seemed a proto socialist, god himself is very authoritarian, which is why religion is popular with the right. Franco, Mussolini, and now Trump are all popular with the religious.

There's a reason socialists are generally atheists.

I read a ton of Teilhard de Chardin in school, who tried to reconcile the science behind evolution with the idea of God as a magical Creator. In fact the science vs creation debate was why I minored in theology. I always liked his semi-concept of Christ as the ideally-evolved human. It always strikes me as odd that God would be authoritarian as opposed to Buddhist. The guys who wrote South Park thought so too.

I dont know how other countries feel on this, seems we are all consistent in wondering what the fuck like? America have resoundingly voted him in, and for the lot as well the whole congress there. He has cleaned up completely. I just shake my head at it now, got to respect what they want I suppose, like Brexit
