Hegseth has served in the National Guard, and he has some decent credentials, but in any normal government, he'd wouldn't be given anything more than a mid-level management position in the DoD at best, and maybe with 15 to 20 year's experience under his belt, he might be ready for the top job.
Does the DoD or the Secretary of State run overseas military for the US?
His Middle East position is pretty anti-Iran and pro-Israel from a quick look at his wikipedia page.
