It's 100% a power move, plus if/when Gaetz is confirmed, Trump will not have to worry about an independent DoJ. Also, it triggers the libs. It's literally all upside. What's the downside? If he fails by a few votes, Trump has now identified the "traitors" among the Senators, which he can then bully and lever into supporting other things, and he can slide in a different AG pick who might be "awful" (however one defines that) but not as bad as Gaetz and still gets his way.
Thinking some more about it, if Trump goes recess, he gets to trigger libs and protect himself, but also is kind of admitting he doesn't have all the senate in his pocket yet. He wants to convey that he thinks he does, so maybe recess is off the table?
The only way it fails as if a significant majority of red Senators stand up publicly and say "we aren't going to accept this nomination" in a way that makes Trump lose face. By significant majority I mean almost if not all of them. But as they are feckless cowards, that will never happen, which Trump also knows.
I can almost guarantee this wasn't Trump's idea btw.
