i remember well, the day we won the league cup in '76.
it felt like the greatest cup competition in the world, other clubs could keep their poxy league titles, their european success against foreign teams that were'nt as good as us, we were the bees knees after winning the cup with the greatest league cup goal of all time.
playing in, and winning any competition, no matter how protracted and resource hungry is always worth it to the fans and players.
it tests the whole squad and brings valuable experience to fringe players.
i have read so much about manure's winning mentality and never give up attitude, well, they have gained that by winning things and having vast experience in all competitions.
we could turn down the europa cup, and not try very hard in our domestic cup competitions and continue to just try to win the league, and or, finish in a champions league spot, but then where would our european experience and cup winning mentality come from?
we might, and i hope do, still play CL football next season, but with little experience against the top european sides we may soon find ourselves out of it and then people will be saying it's because of the lack of european experience, so why would you want to turn down the europa cup where we can gain some knowledge of european play?
sometimes you just have to 'grasp the nettle', try to win any cup competition you have the chance of, play through the pain of too many games until you acheive something. this is how teams acquire a never say die attitude and a winning mentallity.
i know the blue moon is rising, but i am not naive enough to think we are 'nailed on' to win the league or CL next year, it is too soon for us because the squad building isn't complete yet and we are lacking vital european experience, the europa cup would help us with our quest more than hinder us.
disclaimer, all the above IMO
