Douglas Haig

So, then, not even the BEF is to be spared in this vain quest to have Hughes removed.

"I'm totally with you as to what's happening!" - you sound like some clueless wench from the San Fernando Valley. Go away.

"A genius post and wonderful metaphore." Genius? No, I'm afraid you mistake genius for miserable dulness.

Only desperate, pathetically small-minded, and obsessed men could think The Battle of The Somme a sustainable metaphor.

How about a structured counter argument Brucie?

Yes, and let's hear your metaphor...

A brilliant and a wonderful metaphor, however it is also failing to point out that modern day military and historical military men all concur that haig's way WAS the only way to win the war, despite the huge cost in finance and human life, there was no other way to end the war other than to surrender.

Also Haig had soldiers that he could look in the eye knowing that they'd both seen action, knew what Victory felt like and had had success, who in our squad knows about sustained success as a player?

Didi, Robinho, Ball. that's it a 35 year whose legs have gone, Robinho and Ball-someone who almost everybody would rather see the back of.

i got told a story about Sven and Ball last summer.

Sven gets job, sees Ball in canteen, wanders over to chat, asks what he's up to, "i've been here for 6 months but contract is up but i want a new one"

Sven "what do you want?"

Ball "3 years"

sven; "i'll get it done"

now this is two people who didn't give a fcuk about City, it was another pay day for them.

Saturday was bad, but i've seen worse and then we didn't have money to replace every lazy fcuker in the team.

An utterly pointless post and a complete insult to the brave men like my grandfather that fought in that battle to compare them t some of the self-centred, mercenary shirkers we have in our squad.

If you want a counter analogy:

I've spent some time at the Commando Training Centre in Devon. They get a bunch of raw recruits and put them through their paces. They have to meet a standard and that standard is uncompromising. 12 minutes to do the assault course (11 for officers). Some are up to it and some aren't. The ones that aren't get weeded out and another bunch comes in and goes through the same process. Hence the Royal Marines are one of the best regular regiments there is. That's what it will take to break into the 4-6 regularly.

But it doesn't stop there because the Marines (along with the Paras) are the main recruitment pool for the SAS and SBS. Anyone who wants to join those regiments has to achieve a far tougher standard yet and most of those fall by the wayside. That's what it will take to actually win serious trophies.

Get over yourself.
I think you should leave it to those of us who have served to decide whether or not this is an insult.

I served 12 years in the RAF and saw action through most of that time. What have you done for your country?

''Victory will belong to the side that holds out the longest. There is no other course open but to fight it out. Every position must be held to the last man. There must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall and believing in the justice of our cause each one of us must fight on to the end.''

Haig, Order of the Day (11 April 1918)

Or perhaps the soldiers not believing in Haig should have simply held their hands up, refused to fight and surrendered like we did at the weekend?

Then we might not have won the war at all.......
