Douglas Luiz

If it’s Luiz or nothing, do Luiz. But it is far from ideal and he won’t make a massive difference in terms of moving the needle. I do think there is still a decent chance we don’t sign a midfielder.

City won’t no commitment long term with Luiz though which is why I don’t think it’ll happen.

It’s likely that Kovacic and Bernardo remain the starting pair in midfield even if Luiz comes.

cant work out if your for or against here.

wont make much of a difference, likely wont play, so get him ?

I'm conflicted, I think I’m against in the main.

He’s not too dissimilar from we already have but we are crying out for a midfielder. The physical floor of our midfield is very low. Luiz doesn’t really have the qualities we need.

Don’t like the stopgap thing either, I’d take a young lad over this. Give me someone you see being part of the team over the next 5 years, surely we can do better?

I’d only be for it if we genuinely don’t think we can get anyone else through the door.

Your assuming we think he is only good enough as a stop gap

That’s the whole point of buying a player that can play as an 8 which we may have to wait until the summer for as well as covering at 6. Luiz isn’t that player.
More to the point why on earth would Luiz want to be used lime that.
your comparing apples to oranges

Gotcha, think I'm in the same boat. Straight up loan last min panic? Fine.

Is a better Gundo (maybe the let him go Galatasaray) will be paired with Kova rather than play in place of, Not even sure Gundo will be the other 8 with Bobb/Marmoush coming in. Can see Marmoush playing in the middle etc

I'd eat the obligation, to definitely get Cambiaso done though if it comes down to it. He brings far more to the table for the team/squad.

lots of little things about Luiz deal, but none scream YES he's the guy or No fuck that, terrible idea. Just alright fine, do that then.

Would he actually get a game or be in the team constantly? We had him previously, but sold him.
Yes. Our midfield has been atrocious/none existent in many games

If we go into the rest of the season with what we have currently in midfield, we wont get anywhere near top 4

Think the club has done very well to get Mahmoush in, the CB’s I’m unsure how many minutes they will really get and feel they have been brought more for the future.

The midfielder would be exceptional to plug that gap, but I feel we need our first choice signing and if they are not available then Luiz makes sense.

Knows the league, has performed well and adds an extra body.

He does or certainly has the potential to fall in the Phillips/ Nunes camp and last thing we need is another prem CM who is not up to the task.

So as long as there is no obligations, it makes sense to me.

Probably nothing you didn’t already know, but my viewpoint on it.

I am struggling to understand exactly why people think he wouldn’t be up to the job of plugging the hole left by Rodri’s absence in the middle.
He was outstanding at Villa and was only sold to balance the books.
Premiership proven and knows the club.
What’s there not to like as long as the price is right?

I'm hoping we only see him as a stop gap, other than an extra body in mf, he adds nothing to what we have. Did we not have a buyback when he went to Villa.....but just let it expire? For a reason ;)
I don’t know if he is good enough or not but it wouldn’t be hard to be good enough to fill in for our players at the moment

We’re 5th.

We’ve just signed an attacker and two defenders.

It’s a lot if you don’t want or need him next season.
Who's to say we won't? We've collectively been crying out for midfield reinforcements, this is a player who can wear different hats and is a snip. Will also have the much lauded "resale value" if he plays well for the remainder of this season.

Regardless of rodri coming back we are light as fuck in midfield and we ain't getting anyone better than this to be an understudy, or with his versatility imo.

Why? He can play 6 and 8 and is a fantastic dead ball specialist
His form for Villa shows that he can cover Rodri's defensive role but he had 5 assists for Villa in the PL in 2023/24. I don't put Luiz in the KDB, Foden, Gundogan (at their peak) bracket.

Why do Juve want rid of him?

I always thought he was average in the PL and I don’t mean that in a bad way because that’s a high standard.

Not the answer for me though and loans rarely work out at the top level.

We can do much better if we are prepared to pay but I’m guessing we have a couple of midfielders that won’t come until the Summer. I’m just dreaming one of them is Florian Wirtz.

Luiz might work as a short term loan. Imagine if Kovacic got injured again, we'd be in big trouble. I think O'Reilly is very promising but Pep seems reluctant to start him in Premier League games.

Yes. Big games him with kovacic would likely line up in midfield with bernardo then freed up to play off the right as pep likes to do in those big games. We also currently only have 3 players, kovacic, bernardo and gundo to occupy 2 positions, thats not enough, especially when one is 34 and another gets injured reasonably often, he's get plenty of games.

As for him being here previously, We had him as a teenager when he wasn't even able to be registered to play for us. We also had a prime fernandinho and had just bought Rodri in too. Completely different scenarios.
