My wife hates flying so looking at getting a ferry to France and then driving to Southern France/Spain later in the year.

Has anyone ever done this or have any experience of driving abroad/cost ?

Looks about 1500 miles to me.

Heard toll roads can be a problem.

Any advice appreciated.

its piss easy tbf mate.....i would consider taking the euro tunnel rather than ferries, its a lot cheaper and only adds a couple of hrs to your journey.

the tolls are only a problem if you are unaware, make sure you brush up on the french toll roads before setting off.

Nowadays most people have sat-nav, you should try navigating the european roads with just a map ;p

just remember that you must now carry a hi-vis jacket and an approved breathalyser in your car or face a fine in France and since January 2012 all sat navs that show speed cameras are illegal.

Had to get a coach back from La Manga (between Alicante and Murcia) because of the ash cloud a couple of years back. It was absolutely minging

Great drive and a good laugh.

I drove some rags to Montpelier for a ECWC game in the early 90s. I didnt go the game BTW.

Ferry Portsmouth to Le Harve, lunch in Paris, night in Lyon, 2 nights in a resort near Montpelier, a night in Brdeaux and ferry home. The normal roads are superb and pretty quiet compared to ours. Biggest problem on them is overtaking the lorries.

Drove down to the South of France a few times, toll roads are great, usually quiet, not like the motorways over here. A fucking long way though, we usually break it up with an over night stay, make sure you can speak a bit of French, as the ignorant twats refuse to speak the Queens English and you'll need a few basics to get by.

have done south of france near Montpelier back to the North West in one hit
via the chunnel but was almost falling asleep at the wheel at Brum.....bit of a schlep

break the journey at a Formule 1 in Clermont-Ferrand/ Lyons depending what route you're on and then overnight at/near Calais on the way back. Or stop at Reims and do the champagne thing on the way back perhaps. (But only if you're a champagne swilling tory ;-)

other than that a piece of piss. tolls pricey but fuel a bit cheaper to compensate a bit.

speaking french: 'deux grandes bieres sil vous plait/ merci'

Make sure you've got all the right paperwork, the stuff that the French want you to have in the car and some good company. Cruise down there at your own pace and break the journey up with one or two overnight stops. You will love it.
