Drugs

I'd imagine most parents of heroin addicts.

But they became heroin addicts whilst the drug was illegal, making it legal would hopefully bring those people away from the margins of society, and potentially help them to kick the habit. It also wouldn't criminalize the actions of their sons and daughters, whilst the hypocrites slug away on their G&Ts

Are there any studies that suggest drug taking increases massively when they are made legal or decriminalized?

What is interesting is the blanket ban on legal highs. Once again it's a case of the government trying to tackle a subject without real thought and education behind it. Laughing gas is extremely harmless, it'll still be easy to purchase (it's on bloody eBay) however if you're caught with a balloon on the streets you'll be breaking the law. The legal highs such as Spice (legal substitute for weed) are much more damaging than the drug they're trying to replicate. These need taking off the street, however:

  1. It won't stop the current existing problems
  2. As it's a much more damaging substitute for weed, why not look to educate and make that legal
I'm not a smoker, I don't like weed, in my opinion it's a pretty shit drug which makes you lazy, however I can't understand the continued ban. I've just watched this 13 minute documentary on Spice, it's actually focused on the problem in Manchester. You can see the withdrawal symptoms which replicate those of a heroin addict. These are much more dangerous.

This country needs a shake up surrounding the way we handle drugs. Unfortunately I can't see any big changes occurring. People will continue to be criminals for taking an E at a rave or sucking on a balloon (a criminal for sucking a balloon, how silly does that sound).

I had a mate who was in the drug squad in Manchester. His team did a raid on a posh house in Cheshire near Knutsford where they had a tip off that a large scale drugs orgy was in progress. The thing was, most of the participants were top judges, Policeman, politicians etc.

That was in 1978.

Just applied for roles in being a judge, police officer and an politician. Imagine what dave Cameron gets up to?

People often refer to alcohol and tobacco when justifying the legalisation of drugs. But you just cannot compare those to heroin. Surely people aren't suggesting heroin should be made legal.

The majority of people can drink responsibly. Is it possible to take heroin responsibly?

I'd agree some drugs should be legalised such as cannabis. It's not that far from being legal anyway is it. I read this week it's no longer an offence to grow for your own use I think.

So legalise certain drugs but an open shop on all drugs is not a good idea. In my opinion.

Ok, go on then. Why would you ban alcohol?

I was joking because I had a stinking hangover. Having said that I do believe that the misuse of alcohol does cause a great deal of harm. Banning it doesn't work as prohibition shows us but IMO a world without alcohol would probably be a better one than it is with it.

It is a weird world when drugs with medical benefits such as cannabis are illegal but a doctor can proscribe the god fucking awful stuff like Naproxen. You can be proscribed Morphine but not heroin. Morphine is top, proper woooooooo waaaa look at that elephant in the bed opposite stuff.

It is bizarre that some drugs are illegal, i would decriminalise them. It seems daft to me for police to waste time on a kid with a bag of weed whilst some poor fucker might be getting burgled. Decriminalise the stuff and use the money saved to educate kids about the dangers of drugs. The more they know the better in my book.

Think i will take some legal Tramadol before i go to bed, although i will probably have to check there are no pixies dancing on my wardrobe before i go to sleep :)

I know at least 3 people who have had a heroin habit for the last 25 years whilst managing to hold down good jobs, pay the mortgage and raise kids properly.

The drug itself is pretty harmless medically.
