Dunkirk ( the film )

Really enjoyed it as did all my family.

Churchill asked if was possible to save 30 thousand soldiers to be used to defend an invasion of Britain and a total 300 thousand were rescued.
200 thousand were killed.

a lot were taken prisoner. Books like Dunkirk the Men they left behind and After Dunkirk Churchills Sacrifice of the Highland Division tell a great story. Men who were not eveacuated travelled down the coast many miles seeking an escape and fighting on.

French journalists are moaning the film doesn't include enough of the French, one writing for French Huffpost even saying it's typically British to be selfish.

I don't recall us moaning at Saving Private Ryan not having a single British person in the film.

Maybe Nolan ran out of budget for white flags?

My Daughter went to see it today and she loved it, now she wants to learn more about the conflict in general.

I'll never forget it. My Granddad Sgt John "Eddie" Hill a Territorial in the Lancashire Fusilliers was captured there - they were left to form the rear guard as the professional full time soldiers got evacuation priority. Five days under mortar fire followed by capture and 5 years a P.O.W. He still had shell shock when he came out and rejoined the GPO post war as a pole erector ( please folks ) - post war he was awarded the bronze star by the Americans as he had been instrumental in bribing guards to get radio equipment to help the American P.O.W.'s and he was a member of the Dunkirk Veterans Association until the day he died. I have everything to remember and everything to be proud of in that five foot three inch superman. he was a fantastic Granddad too.

Amazing story mate, you must be incredibly proud. My great granddad was captured in the war and won the Victoria Cross as he was a medic and went back into no mans land during a retreat to save lives. He was captured there and then after he'd dragged an 18 year old to safety and became a POW for several years. My great gran got a telegram saying he's presumed dead. A few years later he comes walking up the street in Glossop to a round of applause from his neighbours in the street, gets to my Great Gran's house and she faints at the door.

Looking forward to seeing this, early reviews have been good. Quick question, my 10 year old lad wants to see it too. Is it suitable, or will he be sufficiently traumatised that I get a bollocking from the other half?

It's probably ok. Nothing too gory, although some of the drowning might test him a little. Watched it with my folks tonight and thought it was brilliant.

That's great to hear, I'll see it midweek but it sounds like a cracker. Fantastic if it can inspire kids to learn more.

The BBC 5Live film show with Kermode and Mayo had the exact same question and they both thought so, very little to no graphic violence apparently.

Its funny but my Granddad was posted MIA as well - a couple of month later some Red Cross footage of POW's was in the newsreels at the cinema and my Granddad was seen by my Nanna's sister in the film who stood up shouting " Its Eddie !!! Its Eddie Hill" and ran out to tell my nanna ha ha ha
