Early Retirement

Whilst I appreciate some people's view of live now not for tomorrow when your tomorrow comes and it will you'll wish you'd saved, if you want to work until you drop that's fair enough but unless you are in an office any sort of physical job you won't/want to be doing when your 65 plus. Who the hell can dig roads, plaster ceilings etc at that age. To me the should abolish the state pension, from a certain date say 01/04/20 if you gave not hit 18 you don't get a state pension, people then know they have to save for their own future and not rely on the state. Let's face it the state pension will probably be 70 by then so they have 50 years to save!!

Why retire? Just make your work something you enjoy and make the hours/holidays suit your needs.
I live and work in what could be described as an idyllic village pub which only opens for 30 hours a week. Sounds great, but for the past ten years we have only taken one week a year off for holidays. If we could take 4 or more weeks off, I would do this job, very happily, until I croak. Retirement for me is just about getting the life/work balance right.

Im 62 Im retired but still do gigs, so I get paid a bit and its a hobby

I just went on a cruise for the first time and loved it (Ill be doing more)

People assume they will live a long life but you dont know how long you have

I mean, George Harrison died at 57 even with the best doctors and specialists

whatever you decide to do, do it while you are here and healthy, hopefully we'll all reach 90 haha

George Harrison smoked like a chimney, so only had himself to blame, what a waste.

Incredible man.

I think we tend to have a presupposition with longevity. Life isn't worth anything if it isn't worth living. 'Live for today' is the thing you hear. Basically Hedonism. Subscription to that is stupid especially if people are relying upon you, people who need you, your kids, your loved ones etc.

I think that is why people who have grown up kids tend to let their hair down and not give a fuck about stuff. (they have done their bit and now it's free/me time)

We have created this strange moral/social thing where you have to go through a load of shit to be considered unselfish or thinking about the people who follow.. It is just the way it is in the world. We all have a responsibility... not just to our immediate blood line but to beings in general really.

Sounds like youth is wasted on the young. The whole pension idea is mad to me. You should work until you are physically or mentally not able.. No man/lady of leisure should exist..

They say people live longer when they have a job to do, or someone who depends on them. I don't get "the reward" of doing nothing once you're 65 or whatever..

lol because we are knackered.

you will change your mind i promise.

edit i have been working for 46 years.

;) My mum said the same.. we had a conversation about it (she's been working 40 years).. but she didn't understand my fearlessness of death, and she longs to be a lady of leisure (which I can not understand) I have my own philosophy and I will tell all the loved ones I have left that I want to live usefully till the moment I cant, then I'd like it to end.

It really does seem the best thing to happen to a person to me.
