Early Retirement

Im 62 Im retired but still do gigs, so I get paid a bit and its a hobby

I just went on a cruise for the first time and loved it (Ill be doing more)

People assume they will live a long life but you dont know how long you have

I mean, George Harrison died at 57 even with the best doctors and specialists

whatever you decide to do, do it while you are here and healthy, hopefully we'll all reach 90 haha

Retire as soon as you can, would be my advice. I've seen too many that have lived for their retirement and die not long after It.

My mates dad retired at 55 because he'd seen too many friends die soon after retiring at 65 and was determined to live longer and enjoy his retirement. He spent the next 30 years whining about being bored and having no money.

Mrs Rep wants me to retire in a couple of years time when I'm 60. Bricking it to be honest, Im worried I will be bored, irrelevant, poor etc

Any of you lot done it and have advice?

My dad retired at 61 and he is busier now than when he worked.

- he volunteers several days a week for a local food bank
- volunteers at the school where my sister is a teacher a couple days a month
- wastes time in his workshop whenever he wants on woodworking projects
- and goes to A LOT of sporting events

I'm jealous at times. Especially when he texts me from an afternoon baseball game to rub it in. But he deserves it though - worked for the same company 38 years and sent 4 kids to university without ever borrowing a dime.

In short, take the opportunity if you have it. I'm sure you'll find something to occupy your time.

My goal is to go part time in about 7 years and retire about 5 after that.

Good luck Ronnie!

Edited to fix typo - originally posted "good lock Ronnie!" - not the right message at all. :)

I retired at 26

Im poor as fuck mind. Could only afford 2 euro aways last season

with OUR fucking money!!

seriously though rascal has a point here. retiring albeit through ill health very early. good on him for getting to any games (he saved up during the thaskin era). this retirement was forced upon him so i say work whilst you can. its not just the money its life. workmates, the public etc, general shit that gets you out of the house. most couples have an age gap of some sort, so when one retires the other one gets up and goes to work, if thats the woman the man could easily stagnate at home till she gets in. i could retire now, dont want to and as my wife is 5 years younger she'd carry on. if you think i'm sitting here getting under her feet you have another think coming. i'd end up being murdered. of course on the money side your "pot" has to serve you longer, your state pension may not kick in for say 6 years as does mine.
my plan if things carry on as well as they are in business and health is to work as long as i can, i love it, its not even work though the hours are long. so i will plod on but as i get older take more holidays. maybe further afield. i have the added issue that if i pack in 8 other people all younger than me have to find work elsewhere.
dont do it ronnie.unless you hate it, ease up if poss but carry on.

Well after our new pension has been imposed on the fire service I will definetly be retiring at 52, we've had one to ones with pension people and it's a no brainer I'd actually be losing money if I stayed in any longer. Mortgage will be paid off and hope to buy another house as an investment for my daughter. I won't give up work fully but as my daughter will only be 8 at the time (I'm a late starter), I will be able to take her to school and pick her up so save,as massively on child care. Hoping to get a job at City through various contacts which should bring in a few quid a week and watch the matches for free, double bonus :)

My plan is to retire at 55 from the day to day grind, sail over to the Caribbean and run a fairly busy-ish yacht charter business with some scuba diving teaching thrown in.

Spend 5-6 months over there, the rest of our time split between England and the South American ski season. Just need to come up with a way to pay for it all now!

Hoping to retire part time at about 50. Won't stop fully will help the kids in life and business.

Good for you mate, sounds like a plan.

I know a few people who are planning to retire early. Mainly because I know a few more who didn't make it.

I'm in my early 40's but plan to be semi retired by 55. I could probably do it earlier but looking to get a useful round number in the pension pot.
