Re: Eating on your own in public

By a quick ready reckoner I would say I've done this over a 1000 times in the last 20 years.

I would say I've really enjoyed over a hundred of those occasions and found the experience depressing on about 50 occasions, usually due to other extraneous factors like the fact I'm staying in Port Talbot or it's a Monday and I've been on the piss all weekend.

Some work I've been doing for someone lately - he gives me a budget of £100 quid for the room and £30 for the meal when I stay away- although I quite frequently go over that fairly substantially on the meal and pay the difference in cash - eating a decent meal with a good bottle of wine tends to make the solitary nature of the experience somewhat less dispiriting than if it was at a Harvester. It's also amazing what deals you can pick up on Late Rooms for around £80 a night.

That said, if it was more than a twice weekly experience for any sustained period I'd start to resent it I reckon.

I usually just get a KFC and sit in my room watching the TV, glad of the quiet time as work hectic/4 kids at home. Bliss!
some really

I used to do something like this. I once stayed in Leicester for a week and was surrounded by some really good takeaways so would just take my sportsbag out with me (like I was going to the gym) then sneak back in after an hour or so with a nice takeaway. Saved me a fortune as had a £20 per night meal allowance.

Re: Eating on your own in public

I remember working away for 8 months solid doing up Yates wine bars. Used to pop home on Sundays to do clothes washing and repack for the week. It was a very lonely time even though you are surrounded by people at work and in the bar. Most nights was a meal in spoons as the £10 a day food allowance didn't tend to go to far, you can get away eating on your own in spoons as most people there during the week are in the same boat
