Ebola Outbreak

Heard a Spanish doctor has been flown to Spain for treatment after he caught it while helping others. He sounds like a very decent human being but is it worth the danger to Europe and by that I mean my family in particular? Could the EU and the US have prepared uninhibited islands way off their coast for situations like this?

Not the worst idea that. Too much risk trafficking infected people around the globe. Look at it, that's two American doctors, a Nigerian nurse, a Liberian doctor and a Spanish doctor that we know of infected who probably took every preventative procedure when treating patients not to be infected yet still were

I'm surprised that these good samaritans who feel so strongly about the plight of Ebola victims that they are prepared to put their lives at risk would then want to travel to continents where there is no Ebola and risk the further spread of the disease.

Which doesn't tally at all with voluntarily taking yourself off to Africa to deal with a highly contagious and deadly disease. Are they incredibly selfless people or not or maybe they are just people who assumed for some reason that they could never catch it? Either way, it doesn't quite add up to me.

bodies being left on the streets in West Africa - this isnt going to help contain it!!

Little bit more serious than some of the smart arses proudly mocked at the start of the thread isn't it.

yeah Sam I think this is going to be very disruptive never mind the loss of life. Ive had an email from RSA ins co. this morning confirming they will pay claims on their travel policy for cancellation and curtailment in respect of the countries affected. Its being taken very seriously by business and the government.

so far outside of the African continent theyve flown out 2 doctors to the States and a priest (doctor?) to Spain.

apart from this, one suspect died while being treated in Jeddah, Saudi. Any word if this person has indeed succumbed to it? as reports all point to Ebola-like. Im not sure the state of the health system, but I assume it is quality since they cope with annual pilgrimages?

the idea of isolation islands is not bad either. Create several CDC enhanced facilities by an international consortium. Maybe WHO has a few already and we dont know of them.

Was looking into this a bit today and it seems the fatality ratio is 30-40% lower with this strain than with previous ones, could lessen the impact.
