Ebola Outbreak

As boots said screening at airports is a bit pointless. That Duncan guy in Dallas flew from Liberia to Brlgium and on to Dallas with Ebola but didn't become symptomatic until after he arrived. Don't know why all flights from these countries were'nt just stopped weeks ago. And better precautions taken with any aid workers brought out of the hot zone.
Not sure how this will get contained at this stage, they missed the chance early doors when it was a few hundred infected and confined to a few rural villages, they hoped it would just burn itself out as previous...but now because of this gross incompetence it's well and truely out of the box and a massive shitstorm is on the horizon

So 200 people on a flight are going to have a questionnaire to answer and a temperature screen.
Presumably passenger number 1 will be held until passenger number 200 has been cleared.

That'll go down well.

And this is why there is a fair chance that it will hit these shores in earnest and that when it does they still won't do enough unless the shit hits the fan to the point that it is a genuine catastrophe. People won't accept being inconvenienced and in turn the government are very wary of inconveniencing people. I realise that screening at airports may be relatively futile but I don't believe people would be any more tolerant of being put out even if it was something more effective. Christ, people won't accept having to wait for an hour after a flight, can you imagine what they will do if they talk about shutting schools or restricting travel.

The thing that worries me is that us as Europeans have never in our history been exposed to this disease, could it be that we will be more susceptible to it, like when Europeans arrived in the Americas and nearly wiped out all indigenous people by spreading the common cold. Maybe infection and mortality rates in Africa is mild compared to what's yet to come

I try to ignore when these types of things get attention, as usually it's blown out of all proportion by the media (See SARs, Bird Flu, Flesh eating bug etc.). Is this not the same? A few thousand Africans out of 100s of millions isn't a lot. And can't it be spread through saliva and blood only? If this is the case, I think we'll be fine.

If I had any fear of having it I'd be delighted to be quarantined ... for the safety of my family. Especially so if it's simply staying in a hotel room for 3 weeks.

IMO it's just a matter of providing the facilities and most people who have been in danger would volunteer to stay away from the general population.... it's not rocket science.

And anyone who doesn't volunteer should be locked in a cell.

People at the top never give a sh*t until it's too late. Then they can't be blamed. It's the same in every company, government and organisation I suspect.

If it doesn't spread it'll be by sheer luck imo.

I think there is lot of doom mongering going on, it's hardly likley to spread in this country if it ever got here, the reason it has spread in West Africa has more to do with the appalling poverty which leads to the conditions that make the spread of the disease rather easy, we don't have those conditions here.

The sad thing is that more kids will be killed in road traffic accidents and more old people will die in a cold winter than will ever be killed by Ebola in this country
