Agree - mid season and top of the league means they will want a premium on top of his regular transfer fee. One of the fundamentals of our transfer policy has been not overpaying and sticking to a value. Would the threat of no CL next season change this? Not sure.In the summer we'll have more of a chance.

I suspect we can't afford not to pay a premium this time. The season is falling apart in front of our eyes and I cannot see how we fix things with the current personnel. Lewis, Gundogan and Silva are not going to gain a yard of pace and Rodri isn't coming back. It's shit or bust this January. If we miss out on the CL on account of not signing anyone then that's tens of millions not brought in, plus the potential for us not to land top targets in the summer. Unless the asking price is ridiculously over the top then we can't be as stubborn in negotiations as usual. Probably move on to other targets if that is the case and one season out of the Champions isn't completely catastrophic.
