EFL Playoffs time

Absolutely ridiculous. It only hurts the fans. Imagine you’ve followed your team up and down the country, spent a fortune on tickets travel hotels food etc and to have all that annulled through no fault of your own. You’ve basically been told that everything you did / watched / enjoyed/ despaired was a sham. Meant nothing. All a complete waste of your time money energy. All those times you traipsed up and down thousands of miles all the days you booked off work, the money you spent, the gruelling journeys home.
All for nothing.
A complete waste of your time.
It counted for absolutely nothing.
By all means sack the culprit, fine the club but don’t kill the fans.

But then that leaves boro rightly arguing their game was compromised. They played by the book and lost out on a chance of promotion and a factor in that may be because Southampton broke the rules. Why should they lose out on that chance to get that promotion and dough?

If Southampton spying doesn't affect the game, why do they do it?

Nobody can quantify how much affect it had on the game, that's impossible. But they can prove Southampton cheated and broke the rules. It would be wildly unfair for boro just give them a little pay off and force them to accept they were cheated out the chance of promotion. That sets a horrible precedent.

I think it's the right call. It seems harsh on the surface but the sensible one.

I believe we need more punishment like this in football rather than just financial fines.

Something I've wondered about related to this:

Obviously what's going on with So'ton isn't exactly common but it IS common for fans in the UK to get screwed over due to fixtures being rescheduled when they've already made travel and hotel arrangements with no way to get their money back.

Traveling to see your team away or at neutral sites is a lot more common in the UK than it is here due to both cultural and logistical reasons - with that in mind, is there ANY way that fans can get some kind of insurance when booking trains or hotels? Like - is there optional insurance you can get that says "if the match you're attending gets postponed or cancelled you'll be reimbursed?"

Seems like this should be something on offer as common as it is for fans to be put in this situation.

You can usually cancel hotels within 24 hours no problem but other than long distance Southampton fans, the vast majority would not be staying overnight. Trains no. The train is running as scheduled and the train company isn't interested if the game / gig / wedding / weather is shite / any other reason you can give for not being on that train. And why should they be bothered?

Correct. You pay for a train ticket to get you from A to B. The event you're travelling to see has nothing to do with them. Apparently, there's a lot to criticise the train companies for; this isn't one of them.
 
Unless I've missed it, the big unknown factor is what did this spy bloke actually see. We all know how important set pieces have been this season, in fact over 20% of the goals scored in the championship this year were from dead ball situations. In that 1st leg Middlesbrough had 11 corners plus a couple of free kicks they put into the box. They didn't score. Its not beyond the realm of possibility that the bit of training he saw was the part where they were working on set pieces, in which case that's about as big a sporting advantage you can get if you know how nearly a quarter of the oppositions goal threat is going to play out.

All sounds great, but this would be the exact same situation we'd be in IF we were found guilt of all of our charges.
 
Imagine getting to court, pleading guilty to the crime, getting sentenced, and then moaning about the fact another trial that is more complicated and the party pleaded not guilty to is taking longer. Pathetic.

What he saw is not a big unknown factor though. He was spying on a training session and that's the bit against the laws. Any benefit gained is irrelevant.

Travel insurance might cover it if it can be demonstrated that the journey was booked with a specific event in mind, but would anybody bother with that?
