I have the dubious pleasure of working for a couple of weeks in Immingham and so went to see Grimsby versus Lincoln in the EFL Trophy last night. I have not seen much lower league stuff since my lad was playing kids football and we used to get cheap tickets for Cheltenham Town. That was about 15 years ago and the standard was pretty woeful so I was not too hopeful for an enjoyable game.
I was actually pleasantly surprised surprised as both teams tried to play good football although there were a lot of misplaced passes. Grimsby had a great move on 25 minutes with the ball be passed effectively and then crossed only for their left sided attacker to spoon what should have been an easy chance over the bar.
Lincoln played with a high line and their keeper - Wickens who started at Fulham - pushed quite far out and was involved in the build up play.
Grimsby scored first but Lincoln soon equalised and then won in in the 94th minute with a great shot from outside the box denying the crowd the anticipated penalty shootout.
It seems that the "Pep effect" has filtered down the league and made football more enjoyable.
