Elderly Drivers

As someone who drives a lot i have been noticing the actions of elderly drivers recently, and i have to say that the driving standards by some are shocking. My own Grandparents have had numerous incidents over the past few years and i really feel that when you get to 65-70, you should be forced to take a compulsory test every 2 years to ensure that their driving is up to standard. I was watching a program last night where an elderly 93 year old man was driving the wrong way down a snowy motorway, without stopping. When asked did he realise his actions, he said "yes but i didnt know where to turn around". So, what is your opinion on this subject? Should elderly drivers be forced to take a test every 2 years to check they are in a roadworthy condition?

yes, yes and yes again.

still far better than these teenages to 21 drivers

How many teenagers to 21 drivers regularly pass out at the wheel?

The percentage of young drivers causing death and misery on the roads due to an excess of faith in their ability far outweighs the odd pensioner passing out at the wheel.

Insurance premiums for young drivers are astronomical for one simple reason. They are a bloody menace.

been driving for 10 years now (18-28) had 2 accidents both of which were no fault of mine (car pulled out of side street and head on with a stolen car). i'm sure there are many young(ish) drivers like myself to so you cant say all are bad.

You can add Bus drivers to this list aswell, bunch of wankers who assume they have right of way all the time, pull up blocking the road and are generally a bunch of tw@ts

Mmhh, been driving for a couple of years now.. Every day to work! Havent had an accident yet, no scrapes or anything.
I don't think it depends on age (although the categories stated before have a huge influence), but driving ability and general awareness.
Had a couple of near misses, one just this morning when a twat in his MG overtook a bus at rush hour, road was packed. Near head on collision with him as me and the bus had to brake so he could get back in.
Other one was a woman (no surprise..) who pulled straight out into the middle of the road. Thing is, she looked at me when I was about 30 odd metres away, just don't think she clocked on and aimlessly wandered out.

Although, back on topic.. Old people are bad drivers in general. Some I've seen curb their car whilst driving on a straight road?! Others go slower than walking pace and hold up the whole street at rush hour. Another one infront of me idicated to go right a minute (yes a minute) before she was due to.

That aside, I don't think it's necessarily the categories themselves.. Just the driving ability. And yeah, every 5 years past the age of 70 they should have some sort of test.

I reckon potential drivers should only be allowed a maximum of 3 attempts to take their test, after that they should be told "Hard lines, driving's not for you, kidder". The present system, where even a dullard so clueless as to be stupified by his/her own ineptitude, can simply keep retaking their test until, by some fluke they pass, is fucking ridiculous.

And yes, their should be some kind of mandatory post-65 retest type thing as well.
